  1. Thought this might be of help to the newbie boat angler - an interactive Google map of the well known marks in the Solent, East and West Wight areas https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=17keL1-cC0GYi0S1wvAc0zbTPkPDp88rr&usp=sharing
  2. Could this lead to a bottom trawling ban on grounds of climate change...?? https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/mar/17/trawling-for-fish-releases-as-much-carbon-as-air-travel-report-finds-climate-crisis?fbclid=IwAR1jSkVb9-0eRk3IBXupzmqBt9RbHH0DTnpO6BDAcIhB_INN3qDGTVPaeMc
  3. Seeing as I'm not yet allowed down to the boat I have to live vicariously through you lot to scratch my fishy itch. So who's on the water this weekend? Where are you headed and what are you aiming for? There will be a prize for the Outlaw who catches the biggest dogfish - photos on this thread please.
  4. Well, if ever there was a worthwhile present for the boat, a VHF is it. Or any safety gear in fact. Good choice πŸ‘
  5. All I will say is.... you can never have too much tackle 😁 #tackletartandproud
  6. Trimming an outboard can be a bit tricky. Do you have a trim gauge on your dash? Generally you reach your cruising RPM on the throttle, then trim out until the revs rise just a bit. At this point you can trim in to get back to cruising RPM - your wake should be at its smallest now. Some folks like to trim out until the RPM's rise then throttle back to cruising RPM to get the fuel savings whilst maintaining speed but in my mind this feels like the prop is still at an angle that's not ideal.
  7. If it makes the hook more movable then it would work to move the hook into a snag as much as keep it away, so no I don't reckon it's to prevent snagging. I have a hunch that it's because the assist hooks are/were used originally for bigger, harder, deeper species when SPJ was invented - but for UK species it feels like the the dacron/kevlar braid is overkill.
  8. That's a great result for this time of year. Very well done πŸ‘ What sort of feature were you fishing over? I'm guessing a shallow reef if you're getting bass on lures from the boat?
  9. Don't be snarky. This is a serious question. 20lb braid mainline, and, say, 18lb mono isn't realistically going to increase fish losses, but would improve jig recoveries when snagged.
  10. Does anyone ever use lower BS mono to snell the hooks to the ring, instead of using assist cord? Might reduce losses if the hooks are rigged to a rotten bottom set up instead of stuff that could tow a small boat?
  11. Caught a bit of it last week, the bit where the Captain meets his grisly demise... Looks well made.
  12. Nice use of those pallets there at the top, and never mind the guttering, it's only cheap anyway... 😲
  13. He probably put it on wrong. Scaffolders eh?! πŸ™„
  14. Good luck for whatever you decide Martin πŸ‘
  15. Good way to spend an evening πŸ‘
  16. Top dangling and thanks for the detailed write-up! A good read, despite what @JonC will say about having no pics 🀣You should be able to just copy the URL of your Flikr photos and paste them in here. Drop me a PM if you get stuck. πŸ‘ Interesting that the worm baits out fished the fish baits. You'd have thought the fish baits would have more scent for longer but maybe the cod were just tuned into the lug. Good fishing either way. Shame about the lack of dogfish though, but I suppose you can't win 'em all πŸΆπŸŽ£πŸ‘
  17. Yes, I do, and I have no excuses with the bigger boat now πŸ˜¬πŸ‘
  18. She's a nice looking tub there. What engine does she have on the back?
  19. Thanks Scott, you're confirming what I had alredy began to suspect. We don't really have the ground for them round our way. Looks like I'd be better off catching them from the fishmonger still.
  20. Hello and welcome! That looks like a decent fish in your profile pic πŸ‘
