Family coast walk to a spot we've been to many times before, but I'd not had the chance to take a rod along until now.
While the rest of the gang had their picnic lunch I headed down the steep cliffside to the water's edge, with strict instructions to be back in 30 minutes or the kids would get bored. Challenge accepted!

Once I'd found a suitable mark I tied on the old faithful 20g Major Craft slow jig in Zebra Glow. Three casts in and fish on - a decent sized mackerel for the barbecue.

A few more casts but only one tentative pluck that didn't hook up. With time ticking I called it and headed back up the cliff.

Not a bad effort for a super-speedy session. And he tasted great on the barbecue this evening with a drizzle of lemon juice, a sprinkle of salt and a cold beer.

Thanks to the hairy bikers for their recipe, if admin are OK I will post the recipe later, if not p.194 of their Mediterranean adventure.

I also decided I wasn't happy with the castor rollers, so they will get replaced also.
After that, it just left the winch and winch strap.

It was at this point the decision was taken to retire for tea!
I need to get some glue for the bunk carpets, then can start the carpeting process and get those refitted with new bolts. Don't know whether to go for evostik or sticks like sh*t.... We will see.
Will make a decision in the morning, have to go pick some sealer up so get both at same time....
The trailer looks to have been modded for height, with the roller blocks, and also packers between the chassis and axle. I feel this should probably have 16" wheels, but that would involve new hubs as the bolt pattern is now obsolete.....
Like the boat, what started out as a cheapie, is fast racking up, with the current shopping basket, plus the bits already bout, we are over £500 already, so the trailer is coming in at £1300 so far...... As yet, I still have to finish the boat, service the engine and probably reprop it. I envisage being around £3k all in..... Had I had turned up a shetland alaska for that sort of money, this wouldn't be here but half the fun is the project eh.....

And not to be contrary, but I don't think they're both grey. The second one doesn't have the black spot on its dorsal fin, but instead a lighter spot which would suggest a tub gurnard.

Fishing has been slow for us in July but we did manage to catch Teignmouth airshow while fishing. This was our longest day out of about 8hrs and the first time we had ever anchored since doing our Powerboat-level-2 training.
Only a couple of gurnards this trip and not much else since either kayaking inshore or fair bit further out in th boat. This is also my first video - at least the plane is impressive even of the cinematography leaves a bit to be desired🤔

Actually, you are not far off the money, as mid August is spider bonanza time.
Look for a big male, they had much bigger claws and more meat.

Had another swim early this morning. Missed a couple of good mullet and a decent bass but at least I spotted this chap mooching about in the kelp.

He's due a hot bath tonight.

Down in Cornwall for the week and we headed to Lantivet to take my son snorkelling. As we reached the headland we were greeted with a stunning vista.

Heading down to the beach itself we were looking forward to getting into the crystal clear water.

After an hours' snorkelling together Tom headed back in for lunch. We'd seen some amazing ballan wrasse amongst the kelp. Both cocks and hens, proper fish the size of piglets, plus plenty of sandeels, spider crabs and a sneaky brown crab in a rocky hole that we couldn't quite tease out into the bag.
I stayed out and loitered over a submerged reef for a while, having a suspicion that bass would also frequent the same spots as wrasse. Of course I'd taken my speargun out with me. As if someone had flicked a switch I found myself surrounded by schoolie bass, with a huge mullet cruising below them. I took a shot but missed, the spear bouncing off the rocks below. Cursing my luck I reloaded the speargun and floated motionless above the reef again. Didn't take long for another shoal to come by, again with a mullet in tow. Another shot and success! A golden grey in the bag.

He tasted great on the barbecue with lime, salt and pepper - very much like mackerel.

Maybe, but with this one reckon I got at least 30% of the total meat from the body - much more than I was expecting.
    And it tasted amazing 🤤

Very much worth all the hard work, as the meat is beautifully soft and sweet, my favourite crab meat TBH
Not much in the body, 90% is in the legs and claws
