went out on my friends boat on Saturday, great chance to try my new 30lb Ugly stick and Slosh 30. Tims boat can get us out to other marks quicker than pugwash and its nice to share the trips!
We started feathering for mackerel in portland harbour entrance and soon had a good 15 or so! as it was neap tides we thought we'd try some banks around portland bill having heard of double figure blondes from there.
the day pretty much started out the same as last week - with me not having a bite for hours - while the others pulled in decent fish.
Jason lost a double figure blonde at the boat as his leader snapped, Tim also lost a rig. but then the fish came......
Tim with an 18lb Spurdog, followed by a bigger one (guess 20+lb), then a nice 8lb Turbot
    Jason with a smoothound
it then went quiet over slack water except for the odd dog - i was still getting nothing.
as the flood started we swung round and found ourselves in deeper water off the edge of the bank.
finally my rod banged over and I pulled up a 16lb Spurdog - the biggest fish i've ever caught and a first for me - i was absolutely buzzing... but that was just the warm up.......
I then hooked into something big - at first I thought it was a ray hanging in the tide, but then came the headshakes, and it started running - taking line back every time i reeled in, it made a dart for France...... after about 10min fight we saw colour - a huge Tope! - my first Tope and far bigger than the landing net!
we had it alongside the boat for ages trying to figure out how to get it aboard - eventually we got a rope around its tail and hauled it in!
too big to weigh without harming it, as we had nothing big enough to put it in - I could barely lift it on my own for the photo, we have to estimate its weight based on the other fish caught that day - this Tope was clearly 40+lbs, maybe even pushing 50lb - a fish of lifetime for me, and I am still buzzing!
fish went back safely, and we went home after that knackering ordeal!
Tim gave me the turbot too as he was staying the night on his boat and it would spoil - win win!

Nice report and great that the mackerel are starting to show, pity about the lost fish I hate it when the line parts as it gets the mind going through the What If scenario 😀, from the picture you posted it looks not far from where I have bream marks so I think it's maybe time for a visit, my PB is just over 3lb from around Sandown Bay.

Took the day off work today to catch the weather window.
Stopped off at Dean Tail to see if any mackerel were there, a short while later and we had 12.  Enough to start of our day.
Headed over to Pullar in search of Tope.  All a bit quiet on our spot at the start. I was out on Ray's boat again, Ray had started making his fry up when his live bait had been picked up.
Rod arched over and the fish was on the move.  Quite a lengthy fight ensued with Ray making zero headway into the fish, he'd gain a bit and the fish would take it back. Certainly wasn't a Tope as it was just holding him in the tide, some 30 mins later with plenty of rest stops the leader parted.  I'm calling a large Stingray, I've had a 70lb plus on my boat from not far away.  Gutted we didn't see it but it would have been a monster had he landed it.
Another live bait went down and shortly after a nice Tope picked it up totally different fight to the last fish much more typical of Tope.  Got the fish alongside looked a good 25lb when just before landing, it bit the 200lb mono through.
I had stopped fishing after the monster fish and was fighting a very bad acid stomach attack which at one stage had me thinking we'd be heading home.
We decided to make a move into Sandown bay and try a new spot for Bream,  I've been after a good spot in there as the bay can be fished on even the very biggest ebb or flood unlike pretty much every other Solent Bream mark. Anchored up on a nice little spot and over the next hour or so we pulled out 21 Bream between us with my pop up rig taking the honours of most fish. Glad that the mark was proven and I'm sure in the coming weeks the bigger ones will turn up. Our biggest today was 2lb with most around 1lb mark.
Another nice day to be out with a new mark turning up the goods.

My boat is pretty stable, but there was plenty of rock and roll this morning on my local estuary, with a vicious wind battering against the flooding tide.
After two hours, one move and many lure changes, I finally felt a bump on my Megabass Flatbacker. The fish didn't stick, and a schoolie hooked a few casts later came unstuck, but it was vaguely encouraging.
Suddenly the lure stopped with a bang and a heavy fish tore off downtide with the reel wailing.
My main concern was the bass coming off, as I fish barbless, but I convinced myself that if I kept a tight line it would be OK.
Eventually the fish stopped and I began to work it back amid several more runs.
Then it surfaced in a mighty swirl, there was a lot of head-shaking, a tail like a shovel waved me goodbye and it tore off again.
All the time I was talking to the fish, telling it I wasn't going to hurt it and that I would put it back.
Eventually it surfaced and I saw for the first time how big it was. At least if it fell off now I would know what I'd lost!
Fortunately it didn't come off, I didn't bungle the netting and one of  the biggest bass I've ever seen was heaved aboard.
The lure fell out in the net and I transferred the fish into a big garden bin of sea water I keep on board. Only the front half fitted in, but at least it could breathe while I sorted out the equipment.
My new red metre ruler was unfolded and the fish measured at a mighty 80cm, nose to tail-tip. It eclipsed my previous one, a fish of 8lb 6oz caught last year not far away.
I desperately wanted the bass to swim away strongly and it did, none the worse for its brief encounter with me.
A new personal best and a fabulous fish which I'll never forget!

    Day one:
Lugged fuel bait and chum to boat, slept on boat, froze.... woke up, met Ian in Marina, went out on free flow, 25knt cruise to Celtic deeps..... fished nothing....
I blame the cat of doom. He was laughing at me lugging my chum along. His mate is friendly but his owners weren’t around to bring him down so I was left with Mr Grumpy. At least the boat looks good.
Came home, Ian went home, Emma and Daisy arrive, time for beer!

Due to COvid rules etc was first meal and pint out..... was lush 🙂
I had picked up an electric heater, slightly less cold on the boat. Emma was ok, she was cuddling the dog. Enticed dog over soon got warm, but dog was stolen back 😮
Woke up to sunshine and flat seas so off to the islands for breakfast.

Breakfast in sun before fishing  🙂
about 30 pollack around 2-4lb kept a few for family rest went back. Seemed a shame to put back lovely shark baits but freezer full to brim already 🤣🤣
Stopped in Haven for a nap. Too much beer night before.... oops!

Back in for a bit of grub and more beer. Then popped to Tenby on way home to keep Emma happy.

Gales tomorrow so make some more chum up. Lovely to be back out to there!!!

On a happier note I’ve moved some weight around on the boat, keeps her nose down and bum up, fuel is about 10% better economy. Hit 43knts in the haven before it got too congested to do more but reckon on a 1/3 tank she’ll do 45+ which is nice 🙂

Weather gods finally came good with a forecast suitable for a wreck trip on a weekend we could all make.
Headed out early on Ray's boat, a very nice and flat steam out.  Plan was to fish a few wrecks on the way out and depending how the fishing was move around out there if needed.
Got to the first planned wreck in just over an hour, dropped down and  bang Mark was straight in Happy days we thought,  a few drifts later I missed a good hit and Mark was in again,  nothing big but 8lb fish give a good show. That was it for that wreck.
Moved on the the next one full of expectation that sadly didn't materialise and that was the flavour for the rest of the day, wreck after wreck we ended up doing 15 wrecks in total each either giving us good takes or the odd fish.  We finished up boating 11 with probably as many positive hits some diving back and coming off, best fish nudging 10lb with the rest in the 7-8lb bracket

A lovely day to be out though except for the 2hr steam back and being met by pouring rain back at the marina.

As always the 1st mate of Tarlach Too showed us the way to go. Leo landed the first and the biggest fish of the day, a lovely hound that went just over the 10lb mark.
Here is some footage captured by the chrome dome..
Good to have Thomas and Andy on board again, it’s always a blast watching and listening to the two boys get on like an old couple.
