Well the 1500 came very quickly from  Japan, then last week a mint 1000hg dropped into my lap locally for the princely sum of £200 bargain if I say so myself lol.

This really is a bargain. I have owned the 20-30 model for decades and it's a fabulous blank with quality Fuji fittings. I have a 12-20 rod but it doesn't get much use and I can't justify buying this one.
If you need a 12-20 I urge you to bite Dinoboy's hand off. It's a steal for £80! PH

by locking down I meant winding the star wheel up to lock the drag up, ive seen so many people fish like this all the time and lose some cracking fish, usually popping the hook or breaking the trace line because they are using mainline way over the reels rated usage and the drag wound up to the max. IMHO 75% of anglers use gear way over the top for the fishing they are doing, and thats a fact here in the uk. 
 

ive never maxed out a drag by locking it down, all its going to do is part your mainline 'if your gear is balanced' I think its an important part of the design for the drag setting to be realistic and not over the stated maximum. if a fish needs to run you gotta let it, if you need more drag than you have you are using the wrong gear!

I put a fair bit of research into the 1500 before buying, it will handle anything you might encounter while jigging in UK waters, I also have the ocea conquest 200HG which is tiny compared to the 1500 I use this for all my soft plastic work. As for servicing I do it all myself, all pretty simple. 

I played with a couple of ocea jiggers today, these were the new custom f grey models with the extra fine tune thumb break and longer handles in the 1500 models. Funny thing is you can get these at all stores here in Oz but very few have made it to the USA shelves. On Shimano's new grappler and JDM rods they were a beutifull little match, however that 1500 model is very small. Its amazing that these little things are more expensive than a big tiagra etc or deep drop Ellectric reel.  Comparing it with a Talica 12 in my hand the Talica felt like a more robust bit of kit but no where near as cute!!!...
Had the intension of picking up a Lexa but due to their popularity the store was sold out again.
