Recently ordered another Ugly Stik GX2 20-30lb rod to make a pair with one I already own. Upon inspection today it seems that either they've changed their blanks or they put a 20-30lb label on a 12-20lb blank by mistake.

Rod on the left is the new one. My existing 20-30lb is on the right. Diameter of tip on left is 2mm, 2.8 on right.

Test curve is also different. Both rods tested with a 6oz weight and you can clearly see that the far rod bends more with the same weight as the rod in the foreground (my existing rod).

I'm considering sending it back unless anyone can tell me if they're all like that now?

    Had a check, I thought I had the full range of GX2s but have 2 x GX2 12/20.

measured them & they are both @2.8 mm

So muppets would be no good for uptiding or beach as they need to be off of the bottom, where both mentioned methods would have it nailed hard on the bottom

I use to use the 2 different sizes in my photo mainly due to them catching the tide. So if there was a strong tide run I would use the smaller muppets instead of going up to a larger pirk, so if your using off the beach or uptiding they will drag in the tide.

My first Avet was just an JX, then I got a Sx, 3rd one was the SXJ mc. I was that chuffed with the magnetic brake stopping over runs I bought an mc frame for the JX.

after that I got the MC in an SX & a MX.

the raptors I got because I fancied 2 speed reels so I just got the top of the range in them.

to be honest the main thing about the Avets to me is the MC to stop over runs either uptiding or not paying attention when dropping bottom fishing.

I do like the Accurate 600NN must have had it 11 years now. Have used it mainly for pirking/conger fishing. Got the 400 but not used yet. The everol I wasn’t impressed with using it for shadding, due to line dropping off the edge of the spool making the line loose on the reel, but the button spool release on it was ok.

I stick them on assist hooks to the bottom of pirks for 2 reasons, first as an attractor then second, I reckon it actually stopped me loosing as many pirks into wrecks as they added a bit more buoyancy to the hooks.

Also I use a fine wire hook as well as a heavy gauge hook, the fine wire hook would snap on a wreck so that use to help with the tackle loss as well. Use to just change both hooks out when I snapped the fine wire then remake them up when I got home.

Do many people use them? I've seen and read of them being used for many types of fishing - sharking, cod, conger, ling etc. Curious to hear whether those who use them notice an improvement in catches/catch rates. Or are they more for catching anglers?

Disclaimer - I have a couple of packs of them in various colours, but I have yet to use them in anger. Thoughts?

  8. The following left handed reels are the ones I mainly use. The accurate & Everol are very expensive. The raptors are as well.

I use an Accurate 600NN for pirking/heavy wrecking.
An avet sx raptor for shadding.
An avet sxj raptor for uptiding.
Penn Fathom ll FTH15 LWLH for drifting for plaice (found the braid cutting into my thumb drifting for plaice after a couple of days with the sxj so got a reel with a level wind)

I’ve bought a Shimano Torium 16 HG-A L. & a Shimano Torium 30 HG-A L both left hand star drags. Not used them yet. But both are very smooth.

I got an everol VJ6 light as a Xmas present. With the spool button release. Had a go shadding with it, but the braid would easily build up the side of the reel spool then drop causing the line to go loose on the spool. Think it was due to the Angle of the sides of the spool. Got a bit annoying using it.

  9. Thanks Saintly Fish.

    im after the 30/50.

    ive got the 12/20 & 20/30 braids.

I like the actions of them both but was after the bigger brother for just that bit of extra grunt. If I’m using more than 10oz, I’ve got the 20lb & 30lb ugly stiks but they’re not as sensitive.
