Malc reacted to Andy135 in A question of tides
Hmmm, wonder if that's an old, static version of tidal currents, perhaps showing maximum possible flow.
Is there a little C in a box nearby you can click on, like in the image below? These give dynamic current info.

Malc reacted to Andy135 in A question of tides
That seems right @Malc. I rarely use the tidal current arrows on my plotters but when I looked into them a few years ago I seem to remember they were as you indicated. Estimated direction of flow and speed in kts.
One thing to bear in mind - I believe that Navionics will show the tidal speed at the current time. You may have to dive into the plotter settings (or Boating App settings) to find the current icon you want then select which time/day you want to see the direction and speed for. So, that 3kts may be today's speed and not necessarily the speed forecast for your trip.

Malc reacted to mike farrants in MoTs.......
not the move to once every 2 years - but the fact that a 2nd opinion really is worth it........
I took my aging T4 camper for its MOT in Jan and the failure sheet was over 2 sides of A4 - 27 separate fails - some simple stuff Washer jets, and some not so simple. I got quoted in excess of £1600 to fix and even then the garage said they didn't want the Job and wished me luck.
I had my suspicions about the MOT test as firstly - the garage didn't actually test on site - rather they used a 3rd party and didn't want/need the job. secondly some of the fails were a bit far fetched....
eg they failed it on not having seatbelts in the back - its a van - there's no seats - just a bed,
so i took it for a 2nd opinion today and was staggered to see the fail sheet was a quarter of the size - only 6 fails,
the 1st guy condemned the brake pipes stating them all as "Excessively corroded", stated the brakes were imbalanced, exhaust exceeds smoke levels for a TDI and 'likely' to be impacted by a vac leak, etc etc
the 2nd mot agreed with the welding on the 2 rear suspension arms, the CV boot, ball joint, and head light adjustment.
he actually stated that the brake pipes were fine in his eyes, and having seen them on the 1st fail sheet specifically inspected them closer and actually disagreed with the 1st test on a total of 14 previous fails
new quote is only £800.
moral of the story - sometimes it is worth a 2nd opinion
(needless to say once i have an MOT on the camper it will be up for sale before it costs me any more!)

Malc reacted to Odyssey in Come on then... who's out at the weekend?
Baiting muppets? That’s good fun on Internet forums 😉
On a serious note, I’m hoping to be out of Oban on Saturday 🎣🎣😁😁

I'll be shore fishing with lures in Devon at the weekend - tides and weather look just right for a wrassing session on lures.

Malc reacted to Dicky in BOS 15/4/22
Another day out of Burnham on Sea yesterday, started off in flat seas and a short 25 knot steam to a local mark looking for a bass. Bit of a slow start but a few rays and dogs showed then I had 2 bass one after the other around the 3 1/4 pound mark. Few more doga, straps and thornbacks then another bass of similar size. No bites for half an hour so time for a move down past Watchet. Dog city here with just the odd ray or a conger and a hound just under doubles for me. The wind picked up and went westerly so moved back to the first mark and it was pretty busy with the usual suspects but did get another bass of 4-4 so happy days

Malc reacted to JDP in Slow jigging
One of those rare days with virtually no current of wind. Had been wanting to try some deep jigging over some gravel ground in just over 200m of water. Was able to get away with jigs and plastics of around 30g on the light tackle.
Managed a fish each drop until a mix of razor teeth species started to mess things up. Several makos showed interest in the boat but I really didn’t feel like messing with them after the last few trips where we targeted sharks. Also two marlin followed fish to the boat, might focus on those tomorrow if the weather remains good.
Some very big gurnards were a surprise with two going 45cm and around 4lb, the biggest I’ve seen or caught before.

Malc reacted to Saintly Fish in Solent 15/4
Glad you enjoyed your day steve, it was a long time coming. Great that Mikey enjoyed his birthday and we managed to get him on a decent fish. Next time the adults must try harder (🤔).
Here are a few shots from the day.

Much like mine when I was culling, young roe that were too small for the game dealer were mine as well as the liver and kidneys. I think more people would eat offal if they tried deer liver etc unless it's a stag during the rut 🤢

Yup, same here and I'll raise you a few pea fowl. My fast n furious spaniel caught the tail feathers of one and was airborne for a half second before the feathers pulled out.
Guinea are lovely to eat, but given a year or many dodging the best pegging dogs going even mincing the flesh may not work, we tried cooking gently at a low temperature for 2 hours... tastes like sisal rope!

I've heard of some shoots where you're fined if you shoot one, and fined if one gets up but you don't shoot at it. 🤣

Here's another rather extravagant take on the dangler.

My springer pegged one of half a dozen white hens that the keeper put down and the guns would be fined £25 for shooting them. He was a bit hacked off but knew he couldn't get angry with me.
Apparently the old keepers used to have them so that they knew when someone had been poaching and would keep an eye out for signs of white feathers near people's houses.

Well yeah, I suppose this method would prevent a lot of fish (even lsd's) from getting gut hooked.
I was taught a similar method for cod fishing from the beach with live bait.
Tie a small baited hook to the bend of a larger hook. Then a small fish takes the small hook and is trapped, then the big fish comes along and eats the small fish and the large hook.
it works well in the respect that a small bait can be cast a long way, then a big fish can be had.
