Malc reacted to Andy135 in Fish baits for different species
Just watched the start of the vid and from what I can see a dingle dangle is what we would call a hair rig? The hook is presented just upline from the bait, rather than hooked into the bait itself. Don't see why it wouldn't work for larger species in the UK and might reduce unwanted bycatch of smaller species.
I've seen (but not used) a similar technique for livebaiting with a bridle, where the hook is presented off the bridle instead of through the livebait.

Bluey is a pretty good bait for Rays, bound together with some dirty squid
Although they seem to take anything in the Bristol channel
Crab does the business with Smoothies, they will also take squid and fish baits
Rag/squid for Bass
Black Lug, Blow Lug, Rag, whole dirty squid (or any combination) for Cod
The upper BC is coffee coloured, so scent is key

I use two sand eels and a slice of mack for rays. Bind them together with the fleshy side of the mack on the outside! Use plenty of elastic to stop the small fish biting all the flesh off.

sandeel can be awesome for rays too - but you'll have to bind 4-5 together to get a big enough bait!

Nice!
I hooked one off Plymouth by a wreck, apparently you can disturb them with your lead and they squirt away from it by quickly opening and closing their shell. I was using a 10' flying collar rig, not sure if that's a standard rig for them though 😂

Tim somehow hooked a scallop while fishing and i wasnt going to let the opportunity pass - i took it home, chucked, cleaned, fried in garlic and chilli and served with crispy bacon bits as a starter.
delicious!
kept the frills for bream bait!

Malc reacted to mike farrants in birthday trip = 28th March
took my birthday off work coz no one should work on their birthday when they could be catching dogfish or something.
in laws were down for mothers day so we planned fishing on the Saturday 26th and Monday 28th.
20mph easterlies on saturday kept us firmly on dry land and after a few hours fishing from shore we blanked. so went to the pub.
the wind was due to drop on Monday and having been dragged around Seaton for mothers day we were keen to get out - so we thought we would poke our bow out and have a look - the swell was as forecast around 0.5m and close but wind chop as well - not bad enough to turn around, but not suitable for anchoring either - we chose to anchor up inside portland harbour - nice and sheltered.
very hazy all day - almost foggy but a fresh breeze! very odd,
we were in 40ft of water and over mud - hoping for thornies and conger. fishing was slow all day, we each had a small whiting, phil had a 2nd and then a conger at the end of the day - slow - but better than being in the office. the birthday beers took the chill off too!
no idea what these gonads are - but i caught loads?
back at the pontoon by 5pm for a quick one in The Boot before a fish and chip dinner at the Cove House Inn overlooking chesil for a hazy sunset!!

As mentioned in another post the bad weather has stopped the sea fishing action. With my daughters charter bookings cancelled she's headed into the the mountains again for a few days of hunting and fishing. First day she had a her first try at Murray cod fishing and managed two at around 70cm.
She's now about 700km away hunting in a remote location where she's just shot a megaladon sized deer, which is going to take a fair amount of work to butcher in the field and get back to her 4x4. We've been eating venison all week and looks like we will be eating a fair amount more!!!!...Another feral pest removed, was hoping for a goat but she's still got time for one with all this bad weather.

We use our slow cooker for duck leg confit and it works a treat and next winter we will have the log burner to cook slowly on too.

Trialling is a full time job in itself. I started down the path of training mine for trialling and she did well in the working tests and training days we did, but what got me was the need to join all the gundog clubs all over just to get members preference in the trial draws. Getting a run was so hard as they were so oversubscribed every time. Gave up in the end and focused on picking up with her instead.

Its become a bit of trend with some chefs as the food takes on a a slightly different flavour and texture, holding more of its moisture than other cooking. Its always been popular among the travellers, especially caravan owners.
Yes that's right Andy and you can do smaller one person meals using the dumpy wide mouth little vacuum flasks also. People who head into remote locations can take healthy dried foods like beans, lentils, chick peas etc and just add boiling water and perhaps some jerky or other dried meat for a more balanced meal. I find when Im away somewhere remote I tend to eat what I catch but getting to the location you often fall for junk food for the convenience, which isn't so good as you start clocking on in years. Lots of different pots and sizes available, some better than others.

Mine had a few and the sire was from a gamekeepers wife who I knew well as we went to the same shoots and I should have trialled her as she was fantastic in the field, from the grouse moors to the seashore.

2500 is crazy money. I only paid 550 for my springer 7 years ago. Cracking worker with red in well over half of her pedigree.

Malc reacted to Andy135 in Numpties and regulations
Agreed, and in that situation I'd suggest that any conscientious boat owner should find a way to help educate the numpties about the potential for an accident. Hard I know, but necessary for the good standing of boat owners everywhere I'd propose.
-
Malc got a reaction from Saintly Fish in Numpties and regulations
Points taken but it grinds my gears when you see an accident waiting to happen and you know that to Joe Public and his wife that you are thought of as the same kind of muppet.
Anyhoo are the mackerel in yet? 😁

Malc reacted to Andy135 in Numpties and regulations
This is a perennial challenge in that the only bar to getting afloat is the size of one's pockets rather than a legislative requirement for training/licensing. Ton @JonC's point, even with licensing there will always be fools on the water. I suppose if we think about the number of numpties needing help as a percentage of boat owners we probably have far fewer of them than the car-driving equivalent, and the consequences for numpties are by and large limited to themselves rather than hurting others (this is a generalisation, I know). So perhaps no change is needed - let Darwinism take its course unless the RNLI can get there first.

Malc reacted to GPSguru in Come on then... who's out at the weekend?
Daughter is a nurse, and she called in for less than 5 mins to pick up the grandkids on the day before she tested positive. I tested Positive 3 days later, touch wood, the wife is still ok though.

Ok, after 7 weeks of antibiotics I have shaken off the UTI, but ….. on the last day of antibiotics, I have tested positive for COVID. Into day 3 now but not too bad so far.
