Had a similar experience, 6" muppets and half mackerel fillets and a half pound whiting neatly hooked on an 8/0 meat hook!

Annual trip was written off due to weather conditions but my friends kindly twisted my arm into going over the weekend on the proviso that they got me to the airport or home before my flight to Spain.
First day was choppy at times and finished flat, but we managed to get some mackerel, scad and launce to bolster our few frozen baits and ended up with a topelet, a similar size smooth, a mid sized huss and a mid sized TBR.
Day two and we headed off for tide and depth. First off was a huss of around 90cm but as the tide strengthened we headed to another spot just to the side of a drop off, the anchor kept pulling out and then stopping us, so a slow drift really.
On one of the stops my friend had a knock and a slow run so we thought Huss, but on striking it went bananas! It was great to see a good bend in the rod and eventually the fish obliged and headed to the boat and then towards the warp!!!! It was expertly handled back towards us and netted and tailed in one swift move.

    151cm iirc.
Short while later I had a couple of sharp pulls and then a run, I gave it a count of 3 and tightened and she was off! I thought I would lose her as the tide was raging and she was using it to good effect, however I managed to get some line back before a couple of short runs, and started to pump her back in towards the boat but she wasn't heading up just keeping deep until under the boat and then she headed up...
Then well before we saw the leader she saw the boat and I just held on as she shot off downtide, when she slowed I turned her and started again. She surfaced 15m downtide and managed to turn and run a few yards and then wrap herself on the leader! However after really testing the tackle she came alongside and unwound and was lifted in by my friends!

    mid 150's in French inches.
I was cream crackered on the plane after 2 eight hour days in choppy conditions and just 2 hours kip but I have recovered sufficiently and am off to the pool to wallow and slumber!
    HAPPY DAYS!

Can't remember the last time I fished from my own boat, it's been that long
Decided on a short trip West to target the Smoothhounds
In the 7.30 lock was just ourselves and another (ex) CBYC boat, they were heading further West to Nash and we were staying closer to home just West of Barry
We got the pick down by about 8.15 and waited, I was first in with a small blonde after 30 mins or so, closely followed by a dog
That was pretty much it for the first 90 mins, so we moved out wider. A small tide meant we could fish and anchor comfortably in just over 50ft at slack low
I was first in again with a small hound of around 6/7lb, with crewman will boating its sibling pretty much straight after
This was the story for the next few hours, with hounds coming in 3's and 4's of similar size periodically, and the odd few just making double figures
We also had quite a few dogs and Rays (Blonde and Thornies) which were mostly juvenile and pretty unexciting
We moved when the anchor starting slipping in 70 odd ft and had the last hour on the Coral, near Penarth
On a plus note, my bit of stainless tacked to the "prong" on the windlass, worked a treat
Had my normal "windlass man" up front on first anchor retrieval just in case, and he wasn't needed
The 2nd and 3rd retrievals were both done from the cabin
Also both the new temp guage and new oil pressure switch work spot on
No pictures of inferior fish today, but did get a couple of this old girl on the way in, parked up on the end of Penarth pier

Another morning solo trip as I had to do the school run in the afternoon.
Launched at 7:45 into a flat sea, so I decided to head out to the same bunch of wrecks as my last trip.
At 15 - 20 miles out it was mirror flat, I decided to stay on one largish wreck, and my drift was along the wreck which is unusual.
It was pout city on both spj and lures, but I did manage 2 small Cod of about 4lb each.

Some of the pout were huge. I had some frozen mack to use up, so I quickly tied a blood loop wrecking rig from 150lb mono, and a 9/0 hook. I loaded the 9/0 with a mack flapper hoping for Ling, but the monster pout were shredding it, and I hooked 4 of them, bloody monsters, probably close to 3lb fish !
I will look at the camera later to see if there are any pics worth using.
Just cleaned the boat and I noted the AIS stopped working on the way back in. The AIS 800 has the ‘ready’ and ‘receive only’ lights on, which suggests it has lost its GPS signal, so I suspect the Garmin puck. I will order a new one tonight.
Total trip of 38miles and a cracking day to be out there.

      ·  Callout - Friday 31 May 2024 Solent Rescue were paged by Solent Coastguard on Friday afternoon to assist a 38 foot sailing vessel with a broken rudder, adrift. Our volunteer crew launched our D-Class lifeboat, Solent Rescue 2, and located the casualty vessel with two occupants in the central Solent before towing them to the safety of the River Hamble. The lifeboat was then recovered back to the boathouse at Lepe Beach to be washed down and re-fuelled ready for the next tasking. Solent Rescue is an independent lifeboat, run entirely by volunteers. Malc reacted to Saintly Fish in River crouch boat comp 2024
Some months ago @Andy135 and I (and Leo) were invited by @JonC to join him on Janie to fish the afore mentioned comp. Andy decided he'd rather go to a Frozen themed fancy dress party, so that left just Leo and I.
we made the long 3 hour drive up to windy Essex coast via a couple of local favourite landmarks. M&S food court and KFC. Leaving Jon to shove down the remainder of his spagbol.
Arriving at around 8pm Jon swiftly shepherded us away from his house and into his parents weekend flat (they were out btw), he then proceeded to help drink the Heineken before leaving us for bed and an 05.30 morning rise. @ 06.15 prompt Jon arrived and we followed him to the marina. On arrival he declared we probably could have had an extra hour in bed as we were a bit early. I guess that's the military man in him!

Anyway we made our way out of the marina to gather with some of the participating boats. Then around 08.15 the horn sounded and we steamed off to Jon's chosen mark at a very tidy 18 knot cruise. By this time the false starts of the troublesome engine and the black smoke were a memory only.
Leo started well outside of the boat cabin..

Where after getting up quickly got into some fish, starting with an 83 cm hound...

And then another just shy of 80cm..

Jon got into a couple around the mid 70's and a couple of small school bass..

Other photos contained a bit of non sporting blood so I will not post those. All fish returned alive and kicking.
Bacon rolls were cooked and served then we moved marks.
No fish, we moved into shallower water (nowhere near the deep water that the other boats were in must add) and no fish. So, we had lunch.

And Jon sat and contemplated where he'd gone wrong.

Leo retreated back to his normal position inside with his phone...

And I sat in the sun looking sad because I blanked...

Even though the fishing was slow and hard work, Leo and I had a lovely time and we thank Jon for his hospitality and efforts!!
Leo decided to show off his "I won the boat" jumper..

    The end!!

headed out at 8am for a 9am start to the comp = Tim had got fresh mackerel the night before so armed with that and frozen squid, and launce we were hopeful.
Very slow day for me only bagging 4 bream, 1 dog, 1 thornie, 1 Red Gunard, 3 ballan wrasse, 1 corkwing and a pout.
Tim had a great day bagging up on the bream, dogs, eels, wrasse, pout, a tope, and more - he went on to win most points - well done Tim.

had the inlaws down so me and phil joined Tim and his son out on Seadog on Saturday - glorious start to the day a with mirror flat seas.
Tim had been out the evening before to get fresh mackerel - so we went straight to our mixed ground mark.
Fished small baits to start as the tide was running - we all had multiple bream, pout and I pulled out a lovely red gurnard.
As the tide slackened off we switched to big baits - Tim and his son both had some big bull huss, I had a run of congers, and Phil hooked into a lovely big Small eyed ray! his first!

the wind picked up in the afternoon - and about 10mins before we were due to pull the anchor something strange happened - the anchor buoy floated past us........ and off into the distance - now we had to do some quick thinking - how do we retrieve the anchor without and alderney buoy.?
assuming the alderney ring had sunk to the bottom of the anchor rope we quickly hooked up 5 or so of the fenders to a large karabiner - hoping the chain would pass through - i went up front to hook it onto the anchor line - to my amazement the alderney ring was sat there just below the water - presumably the tide was holding it from sinking down the rope - amazing - quickly with the boat hook and a well timed wave I was able to catch the ring and attach the fenders. we proceeded to pull the anchor with the fenders - which promptly went under and failed to lift/trip the anchor. now stuck fast, we decided to attach the anchor rope to a rear cleat and pull it out again - rather than risk driving over the rope - so back up on the bow to pull in enough rope to reach the rear cleat - this did the trick the second time round and the anchor not only came up but the fenders were enough to hold it up on the surface.
now off to find the Buoy that had sped off in the wind and tide and was well out of sight! we did find it quite easily well over a mile down tide by then, and i scooped it up in the landing net - catch of the day!
some quick thinking saved us having to hand haul it up from 80ft! weird thing is all the Shackles and Karabiner were in tact - nothing had come loose? so no idea how it came free - can only assume the karabiner opened somehow...... (a twist in the rope perhaps?) we now have 2x karabiners holding it on.
