Leo and I had the pleasure of @Andy135and his son Thomas for the day. Onboard Tarlach Too we set out for the Solent from Port Hamble at 07.30 in search of the Solent unicorn.
We had not seen Thomas for over a year, but him and Leo seamlessly picked up their friendship from what seems like the last fart joke they shared!
By 08.15 we were at our mark in the western Solent, rods baited and sent down to the depths in eagerness by 08.30, just in time for the pick up of the strongest part of the tide. I had studied the relief shading chart the night before and hatched a plan to fish slightly off of where I would normally set the hook on this mark.
Andy was first into the fish with an ever so eager LSD (what else?). Than a lull in proceedings. After about an hour I was in and a nice plump 4.5lb codling was expertly netted and bought aboard for dispatch. It had after all swallowed the hook.
This catch set the tone for the next couple of hours with frantic fishing being expertly executed. Shame no more fish were caught though.
We waited for the slack water period to end and just before the tide changed I recommended a slight repositioning to fish a drop offs edge on the flood. So we picked up and re dropped 200 yards North/West of where we originally were. Andy was having rattles consistently and in the true professional manner only he has mastered, he shock them off before winding in.
The boys in the mean time were hunkered up in the V berth playing video games, blowing up balloons and making the rudest fart noises they possibly could with the escaping air!
Soon Andy managed to not shake off a whiting and it was collected for the pot, around a 3/4lb fish. This was followed by another of around the same size, so plenty of white flesh for fish fingers!
Then on Leo's rod the faintest of bites was seen, and then seen again by my keen eyes. Good job it wasn't close range vision work or I'd be fucked.
Anyway, I lifted into the bite and sure enough fish on and Leo took over🙄
He landed another nice little codling around 3.5lb this time. He was well chuffed. But I could sense @Andy135 was turning greener and greener with envy. I didn't want him to feel bad so I kept quiet.
That was it. 15.38 we hauled in the anchor and set for home. Once the boat was tied up and unloaded, some merriment ensued and the cut of Leo's jib went straight through the heart of Andy, who was exclaiming about our cod and his lack of, when Leo remarked "Well that's why they call it fishing not catching Andy"!!!!

    Ouch......🤣

ffs. Why on earth wouldn’t they fit metal parts?
My old lewmar windlass had a plastic stripper(Fleming)  that I replaced 3 times. In the end I made one up out of metal that lasted until I upgraded.

on my other old boat it was fitted with a 1000 master winch that had a metal arm nightmare jon they do a metal one but it 100 qwid not paying that if it go again then i will see about making one

My winch was already on the boat when I bought it Dave, so I don't know that answer.

Is the 700 going to be powerful enough for your size boat.? Personally I'd have got the 1000. Mind you looking at their product selection tool on the web site, it looks like they don't do the 1000 anymore. Not for my chain and rope size anyway.
Did you use the selection tool?

yes mate used the selection tool and spoke to them direct all good just got to install it all looks like i might have another problem it says max deck thickness is 30 mm mine is 36 at present

Went down to the boat the day before to have see how thick the ice was, at least 25mm around my boat and out towards the main drag

The forecast was 2-3 degrees overnight, so thought we would be able to break what ice would be left by my 2 crew on the front using brushes

Got down at 6.30 Sat morning and it was quite obvious that it stayed well below freezing all night and the ice had thickened

No chance of breaking the ice with brushes, or ploughing through without damaging the hull, so back home we came

Shite weather for the foreseeable as well

sorry to hear that bud  at least you tryed  to get out its not worth damaging the boat hopefully get out over xmas

I fitted a lewmar pro fish horizontal. It has a free fall function where the gypsy disengages to drop the anchor.
The South Pacific winches were fitted to a lot of Arvors and Quicksilvers, I’ve read a lot of negative comments about them.

@daio web Ive just lifted this from a post on another boating forum. Looks like you may have to replace...

Hi i have a South Pacific windlass which has developed a fault and is still under warranty. I have contacted South Pacific who are based in Australia who then gave me two contact addresses for their technical support in the U.K after telling me that the postage charge to Australia would be expensive. When i contacted these supposedly technical support teams they told me that they were not qualified to repair my windlass they were only distributors for South Pacific. After that failed i got back to South Pacific who then told me to go back to the original supplier who were Essex Boatyard has the windlass was supplied with the boat. They told me the same thing that they only supply the windlass and they do not repair them, failed again i then got backed to South Pacific to explain the failed situation that i was in. When i had a reply off South Pacific they told me that i had to send my windlass to Taiwan for repair i had a price for postage it was £206 with insurance for cover up to £500 for one way so i should expect the same price for the return journey. My experience with South Pacific was that they were not very helpful they have no technical support in the U.K, after i done every thing that they proposed they kept on moving the goalposts to prevent me from having the windlass repaired in the U.K although they carry a 3 year warranty after the first 12 months the supplier will wash their hands with you and tell you to send it to Taiwan (very expensive) so if there is anybody wanting to buy a windlass make sure it is made Europe and that they have a repair centre either in the U.K or Europe not the other side of the world where these idiots want you to send it. After my experience with South Pacific i would not entertain them they are very awkward people to deal with you know the saying buy cheap buy twice because buy the time you pay for postage it will nearly equal the price of a new windlass perhaps that is what South Pacific aims for you to buy a new windlass and then they do'nt have to repair the faulty windlass under warrenty. So best of luck getting you spare part.

thanks neil great after service there looks like it could be a new one santas comeing next week haha lol

Do you need to replace Dave, maybe a service kit and some tlc of your existing one would be better provided the winch is man enough? Or is this an opportunity to upgrade?

hi neil thanks for the reply the motor has just started going real slow i think it one of the south pacifics and parts are hard to find i will have a look at it on the weekend and take it off to see what i can do on a bench in the shed

  13. good morning guys when i went out last week my anchor winch failed .so i was wondering whitch one you think is best at the moment  there is a horizontal one on there but i see that the motors are bigger on the vertical ones space is not a problem for the rope to fall our fit  the horizontal ones look a lot more compact with all the cogs and stuff in there the motor cant be that big so probaly not strong enough any sugestions please many thanks
