The subscription is just for map updates no? On Lowrance I never bothered with the rolling subscription each year and the maps & relief shading worked just fine. Pretty sure with Garmin it's the same - the sub is for yearly updates not a way of charging you for access to the maps you've already paid for.

TBH…. Where we fish you don’t need it…
I’ve tried using it on Navioncs on my tablet. I’ve found it more a distraction when on the drift. Sonar charts works well.

it’s also worth noting that it’s not an actual chart. It’s a computer rendered version of a chart, so the actual topography maybe different to what you see on the chart….

Assuming your plotter is one of the newer models, then just sync your active captain map tiles to the active captain card in the plotter.
Mine occasionally loses relief shading (2 x 95SV Plus) and that is because Garmin plotters sometimes dont read the active captain card on boot up. Easy fix, just turn off the plotter, take out the card and then put it back in to reseat it, then turn the plotter back on and normal service is resumed.

had the inlaws down so me and phil joined Tim and his son out on Seadog on Saturday - glorious start to the day a with mirror flat seas.
Tim had been out the evening before to get fresh mackerel - so we went straight to our mixed ground mark.
Fished small baits to start as the tide was running - we all had multiple bream, pout and I pulled out a lovely red gurnard.
As the tide slackened off we switched to big baits - Tim and his son both had some big bull huss, I had a run of congers, and Phil hooked into a lovely big Small eyed ray! his first!

the wind picked up in the afternoon - and about 10mins before we were due to pull the anchor something strange happened - the anchor buoy floated past us........ and off into the distance - now we had to do some quick thinking - how do we retrieve the anchor without and alderney buoy.?
assuming the alderney ring had sunk to the bottom of the anchor rope we quickly hooked up 5 or so of the fenders to a large karabiner - hoping the chain would pass through - i went up front to hook it onto the anchor line - to my amazement the alderney ring was sat there just below the water - presumably the tide was holding it from sinking down the rope - amazing - quickly with the boat hook and a well timed wave I was able to catch the ring and attach the fenders. we proceeded to pull the anchor with the fenders - which promptly went under and failed to lift/trip the anchor. now stuck fast, we decided to attach the anchor rope to a rear cleat and pull it out again - rather than risk driving over the rope - so back up on the bow to pull in enough rope to reach the rear cleat - this did the trick the second time round and the anchor not only came up but the fenders were enough to hold it up on the surface.
now off to find the Buoy that had sped off in the wind and tide and was well out of sight! we did find it quite easily well over a mile down tide by then, and i scooped it up in the landing net - catch of the day!
some quick thinking saved us having to hand haul it up from 80ft! weird thing is all the Shackles and Karabiner were in tact - nothing had come loose? so no idea how it came free - can only assume the karabiner opened somehow...... (a twist in the rope perhaps?) we now have 2x karabiners holding it on.

I like the fwd area, good use of space, but obviously it's a compromise with having less cabin space.
TenK, is that how much they cost?

A tough old cowboy from Texas told his granddaughter that if she wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on her oatmeal every day. she did this religiously until she died at the age of 103. She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 25 great great grandchildren and a 40 foot hole where the crematorium used to be. Geoff.

Fishing from a boat is still a bit of a novelty for me, but watching youtube people slow pitch jigging and reading reports here and elsewhere it look like good fun. I only lure fish and we won't be going miles out on our little boat but I thought I would scratch together a budget set up for light SPJ up to 20m. Only lure fishing means I only have small fixed spool reels and I dont want to invest in a multiplier as I have no idea about them whatsoever. So finding a SPJ rod rung for this had been holding me back but one surfaced on the Veals website https://www.veals.co.uk/product/rapture-deep-fall-slow-pitch-spinning-100gm/. It looks OK for a fraction of the price of the more heavy duty tools.

I have some multicolour j-Braid on order.
I also bought a few jigs, and some smaller casting and or pitching jigs which arrived today from Joker who are local to me and I am hoping work on the local fish! I think they look pretty good. I did email the guy that sells them asking for advice on which ones for more inshore areas but never got a response 😒 so did a bit of guessing on colours 😕.

Anyway I don't suppose we will hit the water until June, but when we do I will update the thread if they work or not, and whether a fixed spool reel just generated wind knots! Might throw the casting ones about a bit before that though.
Anybody else try SPJ in shallower water?
    Cheers
    Roger

Joker lures is Matt Forrester, who skippers Silver Halo out of Torquay. Matt used to launch his worrier 175 from Polly Steps before he got his commercial ticket.
Him and I have both been fishing SPJ since about 2016. If you ever get the chance, take a trip out to the wrecks with him, you will learn a lot.
TBH spj with a mangle is not ideal, much better with a palm sized multi.
I was hoping to get out tomorrow but it is a short sea, so mega uncomfortable, but I might get out Saturday.

Yep, take a look at any of my shore jigging posts from down in Fowey. It's a killer method for a wide variety of species using just 20g and 30g jigs.
Colours not so important as weight to get down quickly if from a boat/yak and flutter nicely. Obviously from shore it needs to be within the designated casting weight of the rod in question but I've found it to be a more effective than regular plastic/soft plastic lures.
A normal spinning rod will be fine from a yak. Don't need spiral wrapped SPJ rods unless going for heavier (200g+) jigs and bigger species in my (admittedly limited) view.

Edited to say Ian ( @GPSguru) is probably right about jigging multi's vs FS/spinning reels. It's easier to feel that the jig has hit the bottom with a multi and therefore avoid snags, and they generally have larger drag surface areas, meaning smoother drag actions and therefore less chance of snapping off when tightening the drag.

Thanks both, I will take a look at your posts Andy. I've read much of this site and pretty much all of Ian's posts as its all good info for me. We will probably see if we can get out with Matt at some point. I'm off to Croyde for the weekend, pretending to surf, but will pack a rod and some lures. Hope you manage to get out Ian if you decide to go - I look forward to another catch report to glean info from!
