for me it all depends on wind direction - weymouth bay is sheltered from the W and SW if you stay close in - but no good in an easterly.
if its 20mph or more i wont go - 15mph and off the land fine, 15mph and blowing into the bay no-no
ender 10mph any direction i'll go.
Swell and tides also an impact - i went out once in a light to no wind yet there was a heavy ground swell running onto the bay - so we anchored inside portland harbour - lovely flat calm day - only to be met with the same swell later on the way back across the bay -  would have been very uncomfortable at anchor in the Bay
Windy App will show you wind, swell and chop!

I tend to fish sully bay, good for cod and blondes.
Castle rock off Porthkerry beach is good for hounds and rays
Rumney River in shallow for sole
Goldcliff in very shallow for sole

If you mean the mark wide off sully Island near Aldridge shoal, then yes a smaller tide is best
I have fished it on around a 11m tide IIRC, but needs to be calm
Depths of around 50 ft plus, getting deeper the further you go out towards the main channel

The call is really up to you @daio web, I'm sure you know what your boat and yourself can stand?
But anything with 20mph winds is normally a no no. Unless it's a northerly wind (on the Solent).

WOW - what a weekend - given the forecast we decided to head out to the Adamant on Sat and Sunday - both trips on my friends boat Seadog - a Benateau Antares 710.
Target Big rays and whiting - anything else a bonus
met at 7am and headed out at first light armed with frozen mackerel, squid, cuttle, and pot noodles,
We first tried for fresh mackerel around portlands first entrance, no mackerel but i bagged my PB pollock at 2lb taken on some scraggly old tinsels that i refuse to throw out (you know the ones we all have em) - delighted to have a PB on the boat before 9AM and dinned sorted!

we gave up on the mackerel after half an hour and made the 45min long steam out tot he adamant - dropping anchor on top of the bank.
in about 60-70ft water, decent tide running - 12ox leads or heavier needed.
Tim soon pulls up a slab of a blonde - pushing 13.5lb

we then get into the whiting - many over 1lb - some to 2lb - the bigger ones taking the big bottom baits. this continued the the rest of the tide, we ended on 7 large keepers and lost count of the smaller ones.

once the tide turned we settled nicely out of the cool NE wind, but the fishing slowed down.
I was getting a few light taps on my lighter rod, hoping for a ray i left it to develop, and was soon into a decent fish - giving a few head knocks, but kiting up a bit i suspected a ray, but oh no - we all got very excited when we say a decent turbot rising tot he surface - a quick scramble for net and it was aboard - my first ever and PB turbot - of 4lb. Stunning fish and deffo dinner - the pollock got relegated to the freezer!

that was the last noteworthy fish of the day.
I filleted the keepers on the way in and shared the whiting with friends and neighbours - keeping the pollock and turbot to myself.
Sunday we met again at the marina but chose to head straight to the adamant - anchoring again on the top.
Tim was soon into the first fish which gave a spirited fight and tangled 3 other lines - lots of swearing got the 8lb angry spurdog in the boat - put in a flexi tub while we sorted the tangles, it was soon released. a lovely fish!

we continued to catch loads of small whiting but only had 3 keepers and the dogs seemed more ravenous that saturday.
Tim had a small spotted ray
on the turn of the tide the fishing picked up again - runing out of mackerel we switched to squid and this seemed to help.
I had a huge pull down on my smaller rod in the holder, on a whole squid - but by the time i had got hold of it the fish had spat the bait - knowing to leave it down there sure enough a minute later it was back - bang - my PB smoothound - we didn't weight it, but i'm estimating 5lb.

the bait survived and went back down, only to get me a small Spotted ray - a very angry one!

Tim finished the day with a tiny smoothie Pup.
I went home delighted, exhausted, and cooked up some Cajun baked turbot for tea!

I've got loads on my plotter, whether they're any good or not is another matter 😄
Anywhere on the coral CAN produce
This is just the general area
Aldridge shoal area, make sure your anchor is set to trip
I lost one here a few yrs ago, but also picked up a 12lb and 18lb cod on first 2 casts (not on my rod though)
Pretty much most edges of this sand bank just off the Cardiff mid bouy, also the spoil grounds North of it
If you want to travel a bit further up channel, Clevedon area can be good
The south side of the big sand bank (middle grounds) used to be very good
Be very careful if you fish in between the sand banks just North of Sand point (they can be good though)
These banks are not always where they should be !
I haven't really got many marks that need to be anchored very accurately, as long as you can get on the slope of a bank (whether front, back or side will depend on tide etc) or over a rough bit of ground, that's generally good enough
All the above have produced Cod, good luck
I shall be out this Friday and probably head up around Clevedon way with the flood and see what's about

Hi everyone - just joined the forum and wanted to say 'Hi' to all. I'm a lifelong fisherman, mostly sea, but several years chasing carp, with some of my earliest memories being at Ayr and Troon harbours fishing with my Dad at the age of 4. Now, half a century (yikes) later,  I have a share in a Beneteau Antares 9 based in Portsmouth harbour. I've been boating the Solent for 10 years+  with the family but fishing a secondary activity. With the kids now teengers and the family cruising days sadly gone, fishing is back on the top of the agenda.

Theres two schools of thought on this, there are automotive lads that will solder every time, I came from that background so tend to use non insulate then crimp and solder, then slide the insulation over. The aircraft and train boys say no, don't solder, and again, I have worked in the rail industry for quite a few years.
The big difference is quality of crimps and pliers. Not just any old crimps off of the market (or ebay these days) but proper quality items from the likes of RS, who supply rail and aircraft industries... Decent pliers fetch around £250 used on the open market, or ermmm get borrowed from the railways.....
Quality makes the difference mate. I won't use insulated crimps unless they are quality ones, much preferring non insulated. Excess solder can make the wire brittle and cause it to snap under vibration. To be fair, I've never had that happen on any of the bikes I've wired over the years. What made me switch was the terminals for most multiblocks use latched non insulated terminals.
Whatever method you use, make sure you do a pull test on every crimp, you don't want and important wire coming adrift halfway across the Bristol Channel

Keep at the KFC's and that could be quite a short warranty then.....??
On a serious note tho, you don't have to spend a massive amount until calibration is required, then it gets expensive.......
