So single handed trip this time.
heading west ! Two clear days of weather I just could not pass up even at the difficulties of being single handed with what might crop up..
    day 1,
    No hook ups other than
loads of 6inch mackerel constantly pretty much whenever I tried.
    (always nice when this happens)
Stunning weather and displays of tuna literally every 30minutes  or so but not fields of them just one full breach but there obviously was numbers you could tell.

Managed to catch a good breach shot.
I had one do this between my floats and no takes .
    ….
    day 2 ;
    Arrival harbour 6.30am
    bacon buttys on

    exit harbour 7am
Day due for the same weather but it wasn’t. Was quite a northerly chop going fortunately I was in pretty close which helped but it weren’t ideal… anyway

    no birds
    no bait fish
    not one tuna bust sight
this was looking like a different place to yesterday…
so I carried on eventually found the mackerel and tons of it all small.
after about 4 hrs of getting pushed offshore I saw the birds working In close again and thought I’ll go in for another 2 hrs drift back again from there… so I’m not too far off to finish.

well I arrived at the birds put one bait out sent it back on the ballon.
put my second one down bent down to pick  something up got up and the float was gone !
    F*****!!!
Wer on and at a rate of knots !!ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
A run that was frightening literally makes u question wether this is for fun !
Engine on and into battle getting stuck in with a lot more confidence in my ability now .. although it was bloody hard work driving the boat and fishing this way. I had to be on the wheel continuously. Or it would of been gone !

anyway I had it on the leader but (lesson learnt ) my traces are still way too long pulling his head up without ditching the rod was almost impossible this was about an hour in. Then the fight was very nearly over as that extra long trace wrapped round one eyes and I actually said ‘that’s a lost fish’

somehow I managed to unwrap it with the prop going how I didn’t loose it I don’t know!
anyway so another 40 mins the fish changed tactics now and was gunning for depth trying to keep me straight so I kept driving forward and around to avoid this .
it was helping but getting hard and tiring obviously …. Every time I wanted to get stuck into the rod I need to go back to the wheel to manoeuvre…
so back on the leader gloves on same thing I can either stay looking at the fish 10foot under or Unclip and go for it.
so I did and YES I got her up monumental size what a sight ! I stuck the gaff in and felt a wave of relief but to be fair the only negative was that he shook his head so much so that he actually slipped off the gaff turned and popped the hook himself .

i was gutted from a glory photo point of view but I knew i caught this fish unlike last year. Not a bad job on my own i thought … I wouldn’t recommend it though no matter how many people do it.
Sorry I haven’t got more photos you’ll have to use imagination and take my word for it this time !
    back to Kent!

Another nice day for fishing, which in November cant be overlooked !
Launched at 08:00 (ish) and decided to go back the wreck that had given me the Bass earlier in the week. The sea was flat and I soon arrived on the 9Nm mile wreck at about 08:20 and the place looked like a boat park !  Word soon gets around when a mark fishes well and there were 7 rod/line commercials drifting the wreck. I decided to muscle my way in and in the next hour had 2 Pollock which were about 3 – 4lb.  One of the commercials was using 8 rods when drifting the wreck, and I didn’t see him catch. This sort of crowding over a mark is not my style of fishing as you have to be very aware of what is going on around you, and all boats drift differently, so it is all too easy to get way too close to another boat. This is OK if 2 of you are fishing, but difficult when solo, because you need eyes in the back of your head.
I decided to move out to a 12Nm wreck and luckily there was only one other boat. This wreck has been reported as fishing very poor, so I wasn’t expecting a lot. Almost every drift produced a jumbo pout (probably 2lb) and not a lot else, however, late in the morning I hooked into a decent Bass of about 4lb. After a spirited fight the Bass was alongside the boat and instead of using the net, I just manually lifted the fish using the line, and it promptly fell off and was gone !
Came back in at 13:00 and the sea was very flat, so I couldn’t resist giving the throttle a good poke forward. The boat picked up speed really quick to 41knts against the spring tide with about 700rpm remaining before the throttle was wide open, but then I ran out of balls and settled for a 35knt cruise.
A decent trip of 29Nm, which resulted in 2 Pollock, way too many Pout, and a dropped 4lb (ish) Bass

    A screen shot at 40knts

    4lb (ish) Pollock

Friday saw a near perfect weather forecast so I booked the day off and hit the water. Plan was to head 15 miles south to the overfalls to drift for bass on slow jigs, then find somewhere to sink a squid or two.
Headed out of the harbour to grey but calm conditions.

And after a brief sprint... 😁

I arrived at the Overfalls and began the first drift...
...Many drifts later I gave it up for a blank 😭 and headed inshore to the Fingers, a mark that has produced some good conger and whiting for me in the past.
So down went the pick and down went the squid.

A few rattles later and my favourite fish appeared. 💪

A couple more followed before my time was up, so on pain of getting home late I dropped the hammer (again) on the way back in. 😁

As the title, no cod, nada
Started the day on a flat sea with no wind anchored on the English side of Cardiff spit, after getting the 7.30 lock out
Counted 35 boats between the Rannie and Cardiff North, with more joining after each lock
Fish straight away, all the usual contenders, with a couple of small whiting thrown in
!3lb on the left, 16lb on the right
Didn't weigh mine, but around the same sort of size
Moved up to Clevedon after slack low and anchored on the side of a channel, just inside the Clevedon buoy
6 or 7  boats anchored in Ladye bay, that dwindled to 1 or 2 after an hour or so of the flood
We stuck it out until 12 ish, after dogs and straps were getting a pain
A move to the bottom end of the West middle grounds bank, for the last of the flood gave us more of the same with a few Thornbacks for good measure
Out of bait and patience, we pulled the pin at 3.15 and just made the 3.45 inbound lock
Heard of a few doubles that came off the coral and Cardiff spit, but sadly, none for us
I will show my true colours next Sunday at the cod comp, where I will no doubt be codless again

I had a free afternoon today as our Poole charter was postponed, so after a quick check of weather and tides I headed south to soak some squid for a few hours.
First drop produced a very positive bite whilst I was baiting up the second rod. Winding down into it, the fish felt busy but not at all cod-like. And it wasn't.

Finished baiting up all the rods and so the waiting began...

And I was still waiting a couple of hours later. Nothing else turned up, and my time was running out. Headed back and stopped at the fuel jetty on the way in as my forward tank was showing as 3/4 empty. My wallet is now equally empty...

Still, always good to be on the water, whatever the cost.

Well not really but the little shovel nosed ray is part of both!!!

Quite day on edible species but still came home with enough for a couple of meals. Banjo rays and shovel nosed rays were a nuisance but still good sport on the little kids outfit with 8lb braid. When things are quiet I often drop down to the little outfit as it makes anything I catch seem that much more demanding.

It was Humpback highway yesterday with groups often coming to the boat to check me out, at one point one was so close it gave me a right soaking!!!! When they get so close I pull any lines in as Ive had then get tangled before, which funny enough the last time it happened the whale came to the side of my old zodiac and let me untangle the line from around its pectoral fin. Some knob came flying over in his boat which spooked the family group I had been having close interactions with but you get that with idiots who don't have a clue.

Saw a few yellowfin feeding on very small baits but had no luck getting close enough to them.

Took the boat down to Fowey for 5 days last week. Mixture of wrecking, sharking and inshore. 8 blues to over 100lb plenty of pollack and a bass off a wreck, some plaice from the harbour and loads of whiting when drifting for the sharks. Other fish caught were ballan and cuckoo wrasse, scad, pout, gurnard and mackerel (only 6 all week). Great time and hopefully back next year

This was just a quick morning session as I had to be back for the school run in the early afternoon. I was hoping to launch at 8:00am, but the traffic was horrendous on my 5 mile trip to the slip and I ended up launching at 9:00am. Today it was just me as Billy no mates.🤣
Even at 9:00am the estuary was covered in a thick mist, but I knew that once I was clear of the navigation channel the mist would clear. Due to lack of time my plan was to visit a wreck at 6miles, but once I got onto the open water the sea was flat which enabled me to travel at 30kts+, so the plan quickly changed to a 12 mile wreck.
I decided that today would be an SPJ day and I would resist the temptation to reach for the Red Gills !
Once on the wreck the first drop resulted in snagging on the wreck and losing the last of my leaf jigs which are no longer available. After re tying the leader using the PR bobbin tool, I attached a 150g Osoi jig as the wreck is in 140ft but it was neaps, so very little tide flow.
The Bass were at home today and the first fish was a 5lb’er which put up a magnificent scrap on the SPJ rod. Over the next 2 hours this was followed by a further  4 bass which were slightly smaller at about 3 – 4lb.
12:00 midday soon arrived and it was time to head in, and after an effortless 12.5mile trip I was back on the slipway at 12:25 ish.
A good day, with a round trip of 28Nm ………

    A misty start,

    Fish on !

Collected crew ( @headlight) and made way down the haven. Was a bit more choppy but soon 40 miles out.

Got the drift going but was a slow day a few small blues all less than 100lb so no point in boating the babies so released in the water.

water temp still quite low so will head further south next trip! No fish pics, as not really worthy of pics….
see the burger though…. Dirty as hell but oh so tasty….. #FoodPorn… Donut each side of beef, bacon, cheese….

    on the Tuesday,
so I’m not driving all that way without bringing my own boat …. Me and Ash drove down Saturday night, seperate, me towing arrived 2am’ish,Sunday
head down for all over about an 1 n 45mins then we wer up n cooking bacon on the stove!

out of the harbour and looking for fresh bait don’t know why because the plan Was to hit the lures on the reefs, kind of just goes hand in hand though fresh bait , well we didn’t find mackerel , but we wer hit with launce and a good 20 or so !
    on goes the live bucket.
off out to the marks and on goes a live eel !
first drift just about to wind up fully to re run the drift and  bang the spinning rod goes into C shape reel spinning off ! You can’t get beat a good pollack take (on the right gear) No matter how big sharks get !

we had a few more nice ones and no tiddlers which was nice.
after a while of slack we decided to try something different and pulled right tight inshore for bass.
new for me so I opted for a float to get far away from the boat we both did . And on goes a live eel and drifted over a shallow reef area,
20minutes in whilst  I was slow jigging on the other side of boat for wrasse.
all hell breaks loose on the spinning rod with a float no where to be seen!
fish thrashing on the surface 30 yards away the most anxious battle fish head turning and diving away at the net running up the bow of the boat compete nightmare.
eventually graces the net ! A smidging under 6lb . I swear bass Look so big in the water and out . Such lumps.
After that I turned and noticed that my other rod I was jigging with must of caught bottom and snapped the tip… new rod too .. but I didn’t really care because I was made up with the bass !

a day off Monday as it was due for howling wind and rediclous rain ! Slept in the car again absolutely terrible for you.
then was out on the charter tues . It was a good day out but not bundles of fish .. was happy to be with the company when your 90 you may not get many more and inspiring to see him up on his feet fishing as hard as I can.
