  1. What mask are you currently using? I went through the face mask thing with our HS team at work.  When we replace DPF's in our trucks we have to use an air fed mask, absolute minimum is a P3 respirator type mask,  is it the dust or the fumes causing your issue? There are different filters for gasses and particulate I have seen some respirator types that allow a particulate and gas filter at the same time.

They are now saying the particulate from DPF's is going to be the next Asbestos, nasty stuff

But as he said earlier his engine room floor is dry... If his expansion cap is going from max to min each time then that volume of fluid should be turning up somewhere if it's leaking?

Don't forget it'll likely only be leaking under pressure (engine running) the turbo will be very hot if it's weeping on a run and if it's leaking round the turbo area it will dry off very quickly leaving just crystallisation. I've seen it many a time on engines no visible wetness just a lot of crystallisation

Ok I’ll double check. I did use all new washers and gaskets though.

Maybe a loose pipe clip etc. It would be quite a coincidence to start loosing coolant after the system has been disturbed and not be something taken apart, unless it has an airlock although the older simpler cooling systems suffered less with this.

Yep, agreed. Must be a non-pressurised expansion tank.

@Saintly Fish did you definitely fill the system up enough when replacing the coolant after installing the new turbo?

It's an older style of cooling system not used much anymore, nothing wrong with it and all that's needed in thus application,  modern Deisels however need a much more efficient system hence we have a proper header tank

There is a verticals pipe Scott yes .

OK so that is an expansion tank not a catch tank.  When at temperature the pressure cap will relief and discharge coolant into the tank as it has expanded,  there is a vacuum valve in the cap that as the cooling system cools allows the coolant to be drawn back through the cap into the system as it contracts. Was the level in the expansion tank fairly constant after runs before you did the Turbo?

So . the 'bottle' , not 'expansion bottle' , is on the 'blow off' outlet from the pressure cap ?  ............. if so, is that a special cap (similar to the older petrol Fords) that blows off into the bottle and then sucks the 'blown off' coolant back in once the system has cooled and the coolant has contracted ?

    Looks exactly like that

  7. Sorry for multiple post, having zoomed in on your picture with the red circles I can explain a bit more,  the small circle is showing your cooling system pressure cap,  this is set to relief at a given pressure say 1.5 bar.  The black pipe coming off and going to the expansion tank is there so that if the cap reliefs it will discharge the coolant into your expansion tank instead of spraying it around your engine bay.  The expansion tank is designed to catch it, under the cap is there a stack pipe that runs down and would be under the coolant level?

  8. If you are loosing coolant with no visible staining my first port of call would be your heat exchanger,  as the cooling circuit runs a higher pressure than the raw water side it will leak into the sea water side and go out via the spray head in your exhaust. Or wherever the raw water discharges, if the leak is big enough you may get the rainbow effect on the surface of the water but usually a small crack in the tubes is enough to drain the level down over time and be virtually undetectable.  Only way is to pressure test the exchanger. But first make fully sure you have no air in the system or external leaks

What’s the new update called officially? I’m not sure if my plotter (Simrad NSE12) is compatible. I don’t want to pay for the updated charts unless I know will work on my plotter 🙂

It's called Relief Shading and once updated the plotter should give you that option similar to Sonar Chart on the Simrad plotters, I've got a GO9 and a GO5 the GO9 should be compatible once I update the chart

    Anyone seen it?

Anyone used it? I know it’s available on the app, but I don’t navigate using a tablet I use plotters so not sure if it works on plotters yet.... or if mine is even compatible!

From what I've read you need to update your Navionics SD card then the compatible plotters will offer the relief shading option

My favourite trip this year was on the Overfalls, been trying to get out there for ages.  Weather and tides always transpired against us but this summer we finally got to a mark I'd been scouting.

Targets were Blonde rays and pack Tope, it didn't disappoint.

I lost count of the Tope in the 15-20lb range we caught but the day was finished off for me when something a bit different picked up the bait,  after a bit of a tussle in the tide a lovely 25lb Blonde Ray was netted and both targets accomplished,  weather had its say though and after a few more dropped runs it was time to head in as the wind had started to pick up and put an ominous chop on the sea.

When buying radar, can you cross fit? For example will a furuno radome work on Garmin plotters?

Some units I believe will work together some not,  it will depend on what comms protocol the plotter needs and what the dome supplies.

    May help

Have you got any pictures of the display?
Do you overlay radar on your chart? I was thinking that might become a bit too busy to view easily.

I thought I had a video if it but looks like I deleted it,  you are right it can get very busy.  I tend to split my display so half is just the raw radar screen the other has the chart and ais overlay.

You can make the radar lobs more transparent on the overlay which is something I may play around with but the raw radar screen works for me as you can easily see anything on your present course and see if anything is on a collision course
