JDP reacted to Malc in Biggest bag ever!
After a marathon 3 hours+ on the phone yesterday I decided to get an hour trying for mackerel or herring. Managed to get a tiny pollock and a just undersized codling with the rods. I had seen lots guillemots pushing what I thought was sandeel against the pier wall and rocks but on leaving found this 😳
As we need bait for the winter and I like whitebait some came home with me.
yummy!

JDP got a reaction from daio web in New reel
It seems to be a let down point on many Shimano spin reels but at least a cheap fix. I must admit now wishing I'd picked up another small saragossa but I already have a few of those and wanted to try something lighter on northern bluefin etc, which the ci4 4000 had been fun using on them. Northern bluefin or commonly named long tale tuna aren't any relation to the bluefin you get or southern bluefin we get here, these are a smaller more slender tuna which max out around 80lb.

I use a Vanford for my shore lure fishing for bass, very light and great line lay but the line roller bearing rusted up within a month. Shimano claims they are treated with a hydrophobic coating.....I swapped the bearing for a ceramic, which is noisier but works full time. If you are on a trip away pack a few spare line roller bearings (and screw for them as they are very light and made of cheese, the head came off first time I unscrewed it!).

JDP got a reaction from daio web in New sounder
Just arrived, second sounder after cracking the first ones screen. Unfortunately screens aren’t a warranty item, so be careful anyone who has glass screens. I believe the first chip on the glass came from the cover clips, which was further aggravated by hitting waves at speed, all something these units should be able to handle in my opinion.

This is Pippa the Skipper…. She runs the boat really 🤣🤣🤣
Some lovely hounds there 🙂
Od advise 6in of wire if you’re after tope. 60lb won’t last long at all… or go for 200lb mono if you want to avoid wire

JDP reacted to Odyssey in Tuna
@DickyWe were allowed to target them 1st August. However the season usually starts early/mid Sept.
I knew had been seen so I took a punt, got a crew and went hunting…. Can’t wait to get back out there! If the weather holds hopefully it’ll get even more numbers of fish….
a few more pics ⬇️

JDP got a reaction from Andy135 in New reel
Picked up a little shimano vanford to add to the upcoming trip away to the north of the country. Loaded with 300m pe1.2 grappler braid this will be my light lure tuna, trevally, queenfish and barramundi reel. I will have four on my boat so needed some extra gear ahead of the trip. I will also use this for land based light lure and plastics with the bone voyage travel rod.
This is a comparison to basically the same older versions which will be taken on the trip also. I will of course be taking heavier gear for bigger fish but it’s the light line gear I find the most fun.

JDP got a reaction from Josh in Whales !!
We used to encounter right whales while fishing south of the IOW, however they didn't approach us as close as these did to you. Here though we see plenty of whales daily, even my last trip out for a dive a pair came over to check my boat out. I like to keep my engine running when they are close so they can be more aware exactly where I am. Last year some friends had a whale fully breach, landing on their boat, which left the young lad (my sons school buddy) in a coma and various other injuries.
The whale in the bottom image looks to be feeding, where there any mackerel or large bait-balls of whitebait or pilchards etc about ?
These pics are from the weekend, though I didn't bother to much trying to get photos on this occasion.

JDP reacted to Odyssey in Tuna
First recce on the tuna today…. Safe to say we succeeded 🙂
520-540lb tuna safely measured, tagged and released….
Had another on until the spreader bar gave way, looks like a dodgy crimp…. Wasn’t impressed to be honest so debating where to get a new one from….
Did an hour on bait as well but only a 100lb blue shark…
Nice to get the welsh Tuna season started. It’s usually later than down south but if the weather holds we could be in for a good season

JDP got a reaction from Geoff in Sending it
Not my boat but one I fish from. One of the guys I fish with in his bigger boat quite regularly bought this for his kids. This is the 13yr old running in the engine. We did have a 10km race up the coast in chop at full noise and I was surprised that my 15ft centre console managed to out perform them.
I bought a second hand engine off his kids last boat, should I be worried!!!!!!…..makes sense why there was so much salt under the cowling.
