Now that the weather is warming up and the spring species are are showing I'm starting to think about fishing goals for the season ahead.
Mine is to buy a boat and catch more dogfish. #everyonelovesdogging
What are you aiming for this year?
Getting some decent weather to go out would help. Last time we were out was 15th Jan !
This year we are looking for a 30lb blond, a 20lb Turbot, and a 20lb + Pollock.

Same as last year but one less to do….
- thresher
- Mako
- 6 Gill
- 1000lb BFT
- 200lb Blue (came close with a 180lb+ fish last year)
- 300lb porgie was completed last year so let’s aim for a 400lb+
Shouldn’t be too hard right? 🫣😂
Thresher - easy(ish)
Mako - very, very unlikely
6 Gill - unlikely but possible as an accidental catch, a very deep water fish.
Grand BFT - very possible, my biggest is 109.5” so 800 ish.
200lb Blue - yes I reckon that is well on the cards
400lb plus porgie - again, definitely possible. I have physically seen 600lb plus fish patrolling the wrecks.

That makes things more simple for me as worm here can be very variable in quality. I hope Aldi king prawns are acceptable too
Prawn is my go to bait as it tends to find the bigger fish.
The worm vs fish bait is a choice between an endless string of weevers, dragonets, and tiny gurnards, or hooking the occasional doggy, and believe me, the latter is a better option.

From the boat or kayak I'm not sure how I would tackle them, spoons, bling, spreaders, rag, lug, tips of mackerel or squid?
What's your go to for spotties as I need to seriously scratch an itch as it's been 40 years since the last one I think 🤔
We catch a lot of Plaice, but of course, that is what the Skerries are famous for, however, we also catch them closer to home at less than a mile from the slip.
I guess point one is that I rarely use worm for plaice (worm attracts too many small fish of other species), my goto baits are cocktails of mack strip tipped with squid, or frozen king prawn (Morrisons), tipped with squid.
Although you can catch them at anchor, on the drift is by far the most productive, the drift speed ideally should be 1 - 2 knts
Rig wise, I dont use spreaders, the rig is a simple running ledger on a zip slider with a hook length of about 12" to 18". Not too much bling, maybe 6 - 10 beads, sometimes green / Black, sometimes Red/Yellow, just depends on what I lay my hands on first !
The hook length is 20lb fluoro, and the hook is usually a 1/0 Sakuma 550 or 560. I loop connect the hook length to the link swivel, as deep hooked fish can often be unhooked by passing the hook out through the gills.
Although the MLS is 27cm, we rarely keep anything under 35cm.

They certainly can.
I also have for sale some fenn Mk4 rat traps if anyone is interested?
I use them, nasty finger removing things !
we mount them in plastic soil pipe, so the only way out is over the trap.
got some mk6 rabbit traps as well, they work really well on the f’off big adult female rats.

Good find. Would the compartment sizes of the boxes fit a 200g slow jig by any chance? Would need to be about 15cm by 8ish.
Are you sure about the width, I have jigs to 400g and none of them are that wide
Just checked a couple of 250's and one is 35mm wide and the other is 43mm wide, length wise they are both 140mm ish
The Catch Boss is a wide jig, but IIRC they only make them to 150g

Yep, a full service is about £3k bi annual. Plus the engine service.
Whatever happened to Bruce, he seems to have disappeared off the planet .

Four lift outs in a year for oil leaks on the rams.
That is because sea water, sand, and stainless hydraulic rams are not a loving combo !

Hi, can Hondex transducers cables be extended using three core wire or is it co-ax?
You have to use the same cable as the original, which will be dependent on the transducer. One of mine is a 12 core cable, and the other an 8

Oh, that's a bit different, most of the other recommendations I have heard before.
Certainly not the amount of bling that you would you for Plaice !
I usually use a couple of small lumi beads above the hook, and a small metal attractor blade just to give it the flash that attracts the Turbots attention. Most Turbot inline spoons are really quite large, which is a pain in a strong tide flow.

If you were on new ground and wanted to tackle turbot what would you be looking for?
Fast tidal runs, bait fish, scours round wrecks, sand (mud/gravel...) between rocks, sudden sandy drops?
Many thanks ya'll!
I would be looking for a reasonably fast tide that is flowing over a bank, and then fish on the bank slope where the Turbot will wait for the food to be brought to them by the tide.
If launce are in evidence, all the better as that is their favourite food, we even cut long Mack and/or squid strips to look like launce.
The best substrate is a sand gravel mix, i.e. extremely coarse sand, almost gravel.
Another place you will often find Turbot in hiding in the scour of a wreck, so again, a reasonable fast tide area where food will be brought to them with very little effort on their part. However, scours are notoriously difficult to fish on the drift.
Rig wise, a simple running ledger, using a watch lead to create maximum sand disturbance, and a 3ft flowing trace with a bit of bling. I have tried spoons but cannot detect any difference in the catch rate.
Smaller Turbot are quite willing feeders (3lb - 5lb) but the larger fish are a fair bit more fussy and everything needs to be just right. My biggest is 13lb, however, I fish an area where a 30lb fish is more than a possibility.
I don't normally post pics of Turbo's as it quite often easily gives the location away 🙄
Here is Kyle with a 5lb plus fish, this was May 2020, I moved the boat by a couple of miles to take the pic ................

I ended up with Corel Video Studio. The adobe editor was very hard work to get a video to upload
Yes, the Corel software used to be Ulead video studio which has been around for almost 20 years, and Corel didn't feck it up when they bought it which is a bonus.
I assume you are shooting in 4k30 and then outputting in 1080p ( vid studio does that automatically).
Another editing suite to have is Davinci Resolve (free version) by Black Magic design, this is used by professionals worldwide and can quickly do stuff that Corel struggles with.
Have you had any over heating, or turn off issues with your GoPro11 yet ?
I am now using a DJI Action 4 camera and still learning its foibles. The quality of the standard video is excellent, but I might try out the D-log 10 bit function and then bring in the colour profile with LUTS (Look up Tables) when doing the edit. Doing it that way, if you wanted, you could make the English Channel look like the Caribbean !

OK - many of you boys are Solent specialists - does anyone regularly fish the deeps? what for ? Techniques?
It looks a stunning piece of ground but other than a few small pollack I’m fishless…..
Hurds deep is similar, been there at least six times over the last few years and never caught much to speak of 🤷♂️

Remeber left handed people are all very special. Geoff.🙂
Indeed we are, but at least 90% of us use a standard RH multi and a standard LH FS, only real special anglers use a LH multi, which is a very strange experience 🤪

when trawling or slow jiging do you have to raise a flag or black ball or something to let outher boats know what you are doing ????
No, ball is for ‘at anchor’
ideally you should raise ‘inverted triangles’, which is the international ID for fishing, and if you have AIS class A, then change the status to fishing.

The Shimano Stella 4000 is a decent reel that will stand the test of time, also they are on offer at the moment,

Yes, Leo caught that wrasse on a spinning rod and 5000 FS reel, with the handle on the left!!
Thats fine, most normal people use a FS with a left handle, it is only those with strange brain deficiencies that use a multi with a left handle 🤪
spinning rods are ok for SPJ, but they are too long and awkward for using over an extended period, but short sessions are well ok. 👍
Come on then... who's out at the weekend?

Hoping to get out tomorrow, but I will be solo as Kyle is ill ( has developed UC the same as me).
Boat hasn't moved for 3 months (last time out was Jan 15th ) mainly due to the weather, but I have also been fitting a new kitchen that turned into a bigger job ( had to take the walls back to brick and remove the ceiling) and also have had a nightmare with my disco sport ( fuel pump failure, 6 to 9 months for a new part, but LR are now seeing sense and hopefully will sort me out with a loan car next week.
Just getting the boat ready, both batteries are fine and it started on the button. Just the rods to load and top up the tubes. I wont be going far tomorrow, maybe try for a few fresh mack and give the inshore wrecks a drift or two.
