I hope Ian that your schedule doesn’t get postponed for COVID back log reasons like every other operation seems to be. Maybe some boat fund would be a good investment for the long term?

Hopefully it will be OK ............ I have been told that they want to keep the eye clinic going as a priority and there is a strong possibility that once 'on the books' to get the job done then I will most likely jump the queue to get vaccine stabbed ................ my daughter confirmed this to be true, as a nurse she and her team stabbed 900 wrinklies in the week before xmas ...........

  3. Well the biggest present for me was getting a phone call from the hospital (xmas eve) for an appointment in early January to start sorting out the cataracts I have in both eyes. Apparently some develop really slowly and some develop mega quick, mine is the later variety ..............

This all started only 18 months ago, and they get steadily worse about every 2 or 3 months ............. I was referred last April by my optician and have heard nothing until now.

I was getting concerned as the optician has said glasses can no longer help me, and my vision is getting pretty bad. The optician said I was OK to drive, but I needed to check my eyesight (a car number plate at 20m) every month, which I do ..............but I only drive a night if I have to now as it is much, much worse at night ............

I have always been blessed with very good eyesight and didn't start wearing glasses until i was in my late 50's, so this episode came as a bitter blow ............... the conversation with the hospital eye clinic suggests that by the spring of this coming year my eyes will be fixed ..................

The wife told me to go private, but I refuse to use £6k of boat funds when I have paid NI and Tax all my life ..................

  4.

I don't think it matters greatly about intact, partially broken, or completely broken. Most are chain dragged anyway to keep it as close to the sea bed as possible.

It is more about structure and the nature of the tides around that structure, and the amount and type of fauna growing on the structure ........... I fish some completely broken wrecks that are excellent, I fish some complete wrecks that are also excellent, but the opposite is also true.

However, Sub wrecks generally fish well, whether broken or not, I don't know why, but it is fact.................

I don’t want an arch as it will ruin the lines of my boat. I prefer the look of a strut but just wondered if there was an advantage over either.

Agreed, an angled strut looks more in keeping with the aesthetics of a larger sports boat. However, an arch is more practical for a fishing boat.

To fit an angled strut you might have the strengthen the cabin roof, not rocket science, just more work !

Nah, Jon ........ does nothing for me ............

I have been too feck'in busy trying to work out how to get my international orders out of the UK, but it looks like it will be resolved in the next few days and mail flights will start again ......... it takes time to write grovelling emails to all my overseas customers !

@GPSguru you got any thoughts on this Ian? Also why are some struts angled and some straight?

I saw this, but I guess it comes down to personal preference ............

A raked back strut always looks better on larger boats such as yours, however an arch is more practical and probably a lot stronger ....................

Powerpro being on of the quickest braids to discolour and fluff up

Spectra fades, but does not seem to fluff up too bad .............. some of mine have been on reels for 3 years, so fading is acceptable, but the line is still ok ............ a few times a year I chop off the first 10m just to be safe from any damage ...............

Has anyone here ever taken divers out on their boat?

Yes ............ your liability is no different to taking out any other FRIEND on your boat ....

If you have never helmed with divers before then it might pay you to get a bit of tuition from an experienced dive helm.

Don't forget to FLY THE CORRECT ALPHA DIVE FLAG, and keep the shot line buoy in sight at all times, but stay a safe distance downtide of it. You will enjoy telling other boats to feck off on the radio !

My fancy gear won't tell me what species of fish are down there.

Species vary almost from tide to tide ...............

If you look at the some web based dive sites then you can usually find a good number of decent photos. Sometimes Wrecksite has a link to some pics

I've always been told that solder is too brittle and can crack, causing issues?

Yes and no ....... for a transducer cable I would solder and heatshrink each joint and then use a glued heatshrink over the outer sheath.

Solder joints break at either side of the joint with vibration, but are absolutely fine if adequately supported.

So even though you sell line you don't use what you sell and buy cheaper stuff for yourself, or do you also sell the Chinese line you get for yourself. Goes to show there can't be much of a markup on braid if you find doing it the way you mention works out better. Do you have a shop or sell online and how are you finding supply lately ? Its gone crazy here, with shelves empty and supply not able to keep up (bit like the toilet roll craziness).

Do you also sell gps's or use that title for another reason ?

Hmmm ....... the YGK braids are soft 8 ply and really not suitable for multiplier applications, they are aimed at the shore lure anglers. Put that stuff on most multi’s and it will ‘dig in’ ...... multi’s require a ‘hard’ braid.

The only mono’s I stock are a quality coploymer from Sakuma (Nite Crystal) which was the main stay for many competition casters. I also stock heavy mono (up to 250lb) in large half kilo spools from Supacast as it is a favourite with the commercials.

There are numerous Brands that I could stock, but TBH unless you can buy in massive quantities, then the returns are small as every tom, dick, and harry sells braid and mono !

Yes, I use jigmaster braid on my slow jigging reels as I need a high quality thin braid and it has colour depth markers..... again, it has to be used with care even on a level wind.

The bottom line is ........ if I could find any advantage of using powerpro over spectra, then I would use powerpro.

Before I went over to Spectra, all my multi’s were loaded with powerpro, but  TBH I cannot find any difference between the brands, only the price and packaging.

The GPSguru handle comes  from a lifetime in the public safety communications industry ...... I was using and designing GPS and differential GPS receiver systems way back in the early  90’s for location and time signal locking in quasi synchronous radio systems ....

Stock  is difficult from china at the moment due to staff shortages at the factories as all the Chinese seem to want to be in hospitality right now.

Most of the stuff I stock is made in Japan and flown into the uk, so all is good  for me at the moment, but yes, huge shortages are expected in the coming months, mainly due to container port issues, and Brexit.

are you a tackle store owner supplier.

    Err ........... yes

However, my main brand that I supply is aimed at the shore lure guys, and slow jigging ............. YGK and Jigmaster ............ Braid is a big market place and not a big earner unless you can sell bucket loads of it and therefore buy it in at a cheaper rate .................

When I want Spectra for me, then I just buy it in straight from China ..................

Testing braid scientifically is extremely complicated and not something I would want to be involved with, but just basic side by side testing of Spectra and powerpro  has shown there to be no difference .............
