GPSguru got a reaction from Geoff in Trailer Repairs - what to do with the boat?
Lefty's rule ..... KO 🤣

You don't change the tyres very often on a trailer, they usually date expire first !
The tyres are moved and refitted by the powder coating guys who specialise in wheels and marine metalwork.
They did my last boat trailer, the ifor Williams GP trailer, and the Jeep wheels. ....... all have been fine.
I will get the boat trailer wheels done in left handed blue to match the boat 😇

Good plan. I always feel that left handed blue looks so much nicer than right handed blue, don't you think 😉

But for us left handed posers it does look very nice. Geoff.☺️

The wheel is fine, but it is often the tyre they put on them that has the incorrect load rating .............
TBF, most steel wheels supplied by trailer manufacturers are crap ........... mine are 18 months old and showing quite a lot of rust, despite being washed down after every trip.
However, this winter I will get them powder coated ......... that seems to last OK ............

Quite nice down here tonight... 3 of us in pub, boat filled with fuel and another 200l in reserve, enough to get me to lands end or Bristol 😅😅
7am lock booked fingers crossed to get out 🙂 Even so, a day off mucking about in boats beats working 🙂

Lower the jockey wheel all the way down, so the stern of the boat is at it's highest
Put some beer barrels/railway sleepers under the stern (near the edge where it's strongest), then wind jockey wheel up as far as it goes and put some timbers/supports under the bow sides, so trailer can be slid out
You may also need a good trolley jack, depending on the trailer design
I did this with a 23ft Bayliner that weighed around 2 ton

Toned the swell down now, and significantly smaller once you get past Gower so hopefully with wind and swell and tide following me I can make it home....
My boat is good in a following sea, its a head sea when you get them over to the roof as she rides bow up most of the time anyway...
Not a day for stopping off on the reefs for a few mackerel/bass/pollack that’s for sure!

Sorry to nag Josh, but you should always carry a wooden or cork plug, for those with sea cocks they should be carrying a size for every sea-cock ..................
BTW: Your plan was perfect and it definitely works, but once you have got rid of the water by planing, then run back to the stern and stuff some rag tightly in the hole with a screwdriver to pack it in ...........
On the RIB we don't have an outside bung, just a hull void drain into the sump, which is pumped by an automatic Johnson Bilge pump .............. for the deck I have 2 x 100mm elephant trunks and once lowered these remove water at the rate of 38,400Litre per Hour ...................I have only used them twice, once out on the wrecks I took a huge wave over the stern from a charter boat that should have known better (I gave him earache on 16) ................and the second time was drifting beam to the sea (2m swell in overfalls), when I took a huge wave over the tubes (next to no freeboard on a RIB) ...............
Well done on the Cod, superb fish ..................👍

So Andy was getting all despondent that I was out fishing him. His face had dropped , so I did the only thing a mate could do... I let him reel in this beast. 22lb allegedly .

I’m in awe of Andy. Not only is he the forums dogfish master, he can even get them to come to the boat by the tail..

Fisty and I left early to chase a unicorn in the Solent. As we made our way down to the pontoon we were stopped by @Scotch_Egg2012 to say hello. Good to meet you Scott 👍
As we headed out of Pompey Harbour I caught Neil doing his best catalogue model pose
We're now anchored outside of Cowes.
Whiting, pout, dogfish (yes!!!) and a couple of straps so far.
Stay tuned for more updates...

So trip planned for the lymington launch (as per last post)
arrived 7am ready for action
unstrapped boat ect ready to go
bung plug in .
Turn , turn , click..... spin...
oh dear ....
threads gone... wow this is a first .
ok so now the trip is done... I’m head in hands gutted.
hold on i kno I’m keen but I’m not putting lives at risk over a cod ...
hold on
There’s still some thread in there 🤣.
get the electric tape out . Thicken the screw head up in she went and much tighter ! Not as tight as normal but a damn sight tighter ..
gameplan was if in the unlikelyhood it was now to come out , whack the bilge on ... then throttle wide open to the beach’s.
to be fair I was confident with the bodge or I wouldn’t of gone.. anyway the fishing .
so plan was to go on a cherry pop south needles ground but with the above I felt a little better about staying in the Solent also a first, I usually fish the east IOW.
found some ground set the anchor a little way away from the masses of boats.
We were straight into straps from the off and a steady flow of pouts coming in bursts.
about half way thru the day I had a solid bite that I was convinced was a cod and turned out to be a better conger of the standard we was getting Rebait drop down
off it goes again . Another eel I said to Charlie , ‘Yeah pulling really hard defo another eel .’
up she came my first in years !
into the cool box.
thankyou very much.
‘twas the only one but a very happy bunny . Absolutely flat calm eary foggy water all day.
a salvage success !

GPSguru got a reaction from SiDfish in Suggestions for a new boat
These days i am very much a fine weather fisherman ....................no cabin for me, I don't go out if it looks like rain, or there is more than a 1m swell .............
Yes, push any boat hard enough, and they all slam, probably more so in RIB's because their sea keeping allows you to push them a lot harder ............ I have been airborne a few times in 1.5m sea's at 30knts, especially when you find a big hole off the crest of a swell 🤣.................

Welcome to the miserable old gits club Jon, it is a big club with members world wide ! .................. been there a few times, but after a little rest of never more than a month or two, the mojo comes back and you will be off out there again .................
These days I tend to stick with Wrecks and reefs, because the species are varied and it is interesting both from the sonar, navigational, and angling points of view ..............
All the wreck species are OK with me, apart from slimy snakes (Conger) which are the work of satin ............

GPSguru got a reaction from Geoff in What can you tell me about fibreglassing?
Hmm ............. sound like the Helm is made of something like nidaplast and glassed both sides .......... nidaplast here ....https://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/category/nidaplast
Fixing is easy, but gel coating the surface is not so easy ........ depending on the size of the hole, put a backing board behind the helm, then put in a couple of layers of glass matt, then a piece of Nidaplast cut to the hole shape, then a layer or 2 of woven glass so it ends up about 1 - 2 mm below the surface ............. when dry, mix up some gel coat filler and fill the hole level, then cover with cling film to keep it level ............. then sand with 1000 - 2000 grit wet n dry and then polish .................
The last helm I fixed was full of holes. This was traditional glass coated ply .............. so I cut the holes into one big hole, glassed in a piece ply to fit and then covered the whole of the helm front panel with a piece of thick white perspex, glued on with PU adhesive, so I could then layout the helm the way I wanted .................
Edit : Wnter is not the best time for glassing, unless you can put some heat in the cabin .................. ideally it needs to be 20C (ish)

Very lucky, all things considered. Hope that's drawn a line under it for you both 👍
