  1. Hi all,

It’s that time of year when I start replenishing the rig box for the toothy critters.

If anyone is looking for shark or tope rigs made up let me know. Can build to your spec or just use my tried and tested designs 🙂

I spent a few years there, near Brisbane. It is worth the effort. I vividly remember our barramundi trips up to Northern QLD, and walking in the shallow water of the whit sunday islands with 100 - 200lb stingers swimming around your feet !

It was the family responsibilities that brought us back, together with a move up the employment ladder.

If I were to live out there it’d be as divorcee, Em ain’t moving Aus so I’d best stay home 🙂

Anyone who hopes that the tuna fishing will open up to being legally able to do from their own boat will do better with something they can launch where the fish are, same goes for sharking really. Some of the heavy tackle needed is quite an investment, so hoping the fish will simply turn up in range of your dock every weekend would be extremely unlikely and the investment wasted.

Getting out and exploring the many wrecks around the coast is a no brainer, the trailer boat would have far more options for a variety of species. Weekends away with the family exploring new waterways and restaurants in the evening might appeal to the other half too, even if he or she doesn't fish during the day.

However if I didn't have the room to keep a boat at home I would consider a more permanent place to keep it but having had several boats kept on swinging moorings and pontoons I personally found it to be restrictive, time consuming and expensive, not to mention I lost one of my boats on a swing mooring to a storm.

Out of my last five boating trips, only one has been from my local area.

I completely agree…. I’m based in Milford. If I was hunting Tuna or sharks on a smaller boat I’d want to be mobile….

Just a shame that there are not that many really good places to launch… in Bristol Channel we are fortunate to have quite a few but given size of tides they are limited by tides (except Cardiff and perhaps Milford haven).

A trailer boat is tempting…. A nice RIB I can code, use for teaching and a few trips in summer and then drag it down south for the big stuff while keeping main boat for 80% of my fishing but funds don’t allow for 2 sadly…. So I guess I’ll just have to drag Emma to Australia and move out there instwsd 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  4. Morning all,

Managed to get my hands on these as a raffle prize.(Saltist 30H). I’m going to load up with 30lb Spectra braid, but as these maybe used by customers on the boat for lure fishing or bottom fishing out in the deeps I’m in 2 minds about a mono rubbing leader…. What’s your thoughts? They’ll be used for shallow water reefing (10-60ft) or deep water drifting (300-400ft)…

Anyway, they look lovely… but im an Avet fan myself although the 6.4:1 retrieve useful for getting gesr up quick 🙂

  5. It arrived as part as the roadshow in Cardiff on Sunday. They were offering free rides to take it for a spin…. So I had to have a go….

50knts, dry ride, maintained a full throttle turn up to 30knts (same as mine) got a bit more fun at 35knts. Not much keel but handled nice at low speed. I could park it one handed (as in one hand in pocket), so nice tight turning circle. Russ was a bit worried at first but my parking was better than his…. 😉

Aluminum construction, on a trailer, can sleep on it, well kitted out….

id have one in a flash but at £120k it’ll have to wait… especially as you can’t code it for commercial use. If you could it would be the perfect weapon for me…. Park in marina part time, trailer to new location to chase fish, best of both worlds…. If only it was cheaper!

Boat is an Extreme 745 Game King…. Worth a look on YouTube 🙂 I can see the attraction that @JDP has for a trailer boat 🙂

  6. Lever drags are great for when you want to vary the drag…. I use them a lot for sharking etc. I also use them for light lure work when a pollack etc can hit the lure hard.

For my general uptiding I use a star drag. Works fine, easy to use…. If you don’t want to fine tune the drag don’t use a lever drag, just use a star drag and save your £££ 🙂

  7. Anyone use it at all?

I recently bit the bullet and downloaded the navionkcs app…. It’s awesome 😎 Kind of feeling stupid for not doing it sooner….

Seems that I can plan routes on it and upload to my plotter…. Whixh is cool. It seems I can control my plotter from phone too…. But just wondering if it’s worth using the app? Anyone use phones tablets for this kind of thing? 🤔

  8. A wife treats her man by taking him to a Strip Club for his birthday... At The Club, The Doorman Says, "Hey Johnny, How are You?" The wife asks, "How does he know you? Johnny says, "Oh dear, I play football with him." Inside the Bartender Says, "The Usual, Johnny?" Johnny says to Wife, "Before you say anything, He's on the Darts Team." Next a stripper Says, "Hi Johnny! Do You Crave the Special Again??" The wife storms out dragging Johnny with her & jumps into a taxi... The Taxi driver Says, "Hey Johnny Boy! You picked up an ugly one this time...."

Just thought I'd mention how much I'm enjoying not having to haul the boat out and spend money on servicing, maintenance etc.

    That is all. 👍

I’ve got a big one this year but fingers crossed this is it for 5 years…. Soon be back on the water doing what I love 🙂

Until then I just don’t even look at the credit card bill and just hope that no more invoices appear anytime soon 🤣🤣🤣

I'm so sad to read this Ian.... 🤣 the disco wasn't becoming increasingly unreliable but increasingly expensive to run at 17-19mpg and I needed (at this point in my life to give up the love affair for various reasons 😬) to get something with more grunt and less time spending maintaining. Btw, it never let me down once in 5 years 😊 I still miss it 😞

@Odyssey my 3.0l Hilux DC Invincible (2013 model) is just about the best vehicle I have ever owned. It's an auto and does 28mpg on average for the journeys we do in it. I bought it in favour of the Ford Ranger based on the fact it is an inline 4 and pretty basic and easy to service/maintain with less to go wrong. My neighbour is a mechanic by trade (runs a crane hire company) and he said a mechanic he knows had nothing good to say about the Ranger's engines but you can make of that what you will 🤷‍♂️

Having owned it and used it for towing my twin axle 'van for 9 months I can honestly say it is an awesome vehicle. Towing with it is just great, not as powerful as the Ranger or some others but it's got what you need when you need it.

Hope you get what you're looking for 🤞

    Thanks for the insights!

Not too worried about towing as don’t have a tow boat yet, maybe in 18 months a 6-8m RIB maybe on the scene, so hence the towing requirement. However, a rig that size shouldn’t be too heavy.

I guess if it’s too good for towing in the in-laws will want to borrow it to drag their classic cars about 😬😬😬

I’ll add it to the shopping list and jump in one to test drive 🙂 Main concern is that Em needs to understand it ain’t a car, it’s a truck to lug fishing gear/boat kit/drag a boat about….

Are you buying new or used? Leasing may be a decent way to go, at least then you don’t need to consider maintenance costs etc.

given the cost it’ll be used. It’ll be bought through a company so I’m looking at finance options too.

Got a few bits to sort out on boat but hopefully back in water soon and then take some for a test drive.

L200 is a contender but harder to find from what I can see…  Decent load capacity be useful as can chuck all boat kit in back and not worry about ruining car which is wgst currently do…
