  1. I have an old Icom in the house but it’s not DSC enabled. Needs a new mic as well. However it does have fog horn/hailer. So I may fit that to boat as a spare and use it mainly as a hailer/foghorn.... assuming it doesn’t cost the earth to get a mic for it!

There are rag in Dale but not sure where.... 🤔 don’t bait fish much. Where is land shipping in case they are still there 😁
  3. Welcome.... We are an eclectic bunch. You enter sane but then buy a boat. They end up driving you insane, but you won’t want to give it up 🙂
  4. Optimal uses direct injection IIRC therefore similar to EFI 4S. However more noisy. Given a raider with engine at right height and propped correctly you’ll get 0.8l/m. Depending on how far you travel/how often I doubt you’ll see much difference in rubbing costs 🙂
  5. Nope! Nearest is Aberthaw about 45-50 mins from where I live. Swansea/Gower has most that’s a big over an hour each way
  6. EFI injection. Ill see what is already fitted as waiting for new water fuel separators to turn up, will get numbers off fuel lines abs sort it then 🙂
  7. Costs more to get to the crab gounds.... same as digging/pumping worm. Unless I’m seeing my family in Swansea.... I used to try and visit them on spring tides so I could pump black lug for the freezer at same time 🤣
  8. Hmmm sounds like plan hopefully I won’t look dodgy with a handful of knives and avoid being arrested 🤣
  9. Recommendations please for a good bait knife. My cheapo mustard one is broke, the other fell overboard on last trip... Any good ones for a good price? 🤔😊
  10. In preference order.... (as in dogfish attractiveness) 1). sandeel 2). Mackerel 3). Bluey 4). Worm 5). Squid i don’t use any other baits but on rare times I use crab it keeps them at bay but waste of money if they do steal it.
  11. Porthcawl insurance are good. Ive never made a claim but I’ve heard good things if you need to.
  12. That’s what I’m struggling to find.... It can wait until I’m next down there to get it off existing lines
  13. Hi all, I want to renew my fuel lines from tank to water separator.... Do I need a specific hose type? (Obviously one suited for petrol!) it’s for 300hp engines so not sure if I need high pressure lines? it’s only a short run of about 1m... Its one of those things where it ain’t gone yet but I’d rather replace before it fails!

Nope, Pirate are still going.... His name is Andy Townsend, runs the buisness with his wife Emma and got a few fitters as well. Hes trying to broaden out into other things like GRP and electrical as well
  15. Opti max still a good engine, with low hours you can always sell and look out for a 4 stroke replacement
  16. I’ve seen enough smoke when 400Vdc went wrong.... had some big bangs when dumped a few thousand amps out of a battery. 25kV sounds much more interesting!
  17. Before my current job I was an expert in power electronics and electrical machines. as long as there was torque on that shaft controlled down to 0.1Nm from a 300Nm machine I didn’t mind what the grease monkeys did with their gear boxes with bearings, oil, gears, oil coolers, recirculating pumps and oil mist cooling..... mystery to me! Give me 3 cables to the motor and 400Vdc to my inverter and I could make it sit up and dance 🙂
  18. I’m not sure if it was viscosity or the oil breaking down.... he did explain in a lot of detail but I’m not a grease monkey.... Oil is runny stuff that goes in gear boxes and engines. When it gets hot it degrades. I don’t know much else about it. Its definitiatly a higher grade of gear oil that he’s using... Engine oil is a different conversation to be had! Ekectrivs are simple, I can talk for hours about them 🙂 greasy/oily things are the devils magic.... Your explainaruon sounds similar to what he was on about... I may just record it so you can translate into simple terms for this electronic engineer to work out 🙂 Bearings are fine apparently but the seals are known to go on those engines, hence the higher grade oil to look after them all.... This is why I pay a mechanic to deal with the moving bits. With electrics they can’t leak, cover you in muck, or confuse my brain with oils.....

What’s great is that he’s ordered 25l of it and is looking to make the reccomendation to other customers. Not just looking in a service guide, follow step 1,2,3. It’s the taking the time out to really understand the customers usage profile that has impressed me.

West Wales Marine. Based in Neyland. Not to be confused with Dale Sailing also based in Neyland..... or Quadra Marine based in Milford Haven...... 😬😬😬
  21. Ok, My new friendly mechanic has been chatting me to me about oil. His veiw is this.... Quality of oil is dependant on quality of engine. If you are a leisure user doing 30 hours a year feel free to use cheap oil.... especially if you change it every year. If you run a “serious” engine (150hp+) use high grade. Outboards are different to cars, they can get hot, yes you are passing water through it but add salt/silt in there and it’s not as effective as you think. You can use standard oils but if you’re doing lots of hours don’t do it. It will cost long term. He had had my gear oil inspected and tested by an independent oil supplier. Previously Quicksilver gesr oil was used. I’m now moving up 2 grades. It will help lengthen the lifetime of the gear box seals too. He’s seen too many engines where the viscosity drops through use and this builds pressure on the seals which can lead to failure. He also strongly recommended using marine oil. In his words “it’s a couple of quid, but will cost far more once your seals go and gear box siezes under load”. It’s my choice but for the sake of: - £10 extra per engine oil x 2 - £5 extra for gear oil x 2 so £30 extra, why take the risk? If i was running 20-30 hours a year plodding along locally then I may reconsider as my usage wouldn’t require such high grade oil.... but I’m not. Im not judging anyone nor am I an expert just passing on my learnings/feedback 🙂

So I’ve spoken to my mechanic. He had to change a seal on the gearbox. Didn’t call me first as didn’t want to trouble me. He’s only charging me 30 mins Labour even though it took much longer as he wanted his apprentice to get some experience. He’s had it all pressure tested etc so it’s safe. He didn’t like the gear oil that was in there, sent some to his oil supplier who have looked at it and have suggested a higher grade of oil. No extra charge for this. He maybe a main dealer but im really impressed so far. He has kept all the old parts and won’t invoice me until I have inspected them to make sure I’m happy.... Apparently this is standard for commercial guys. So not all main dealers are a rip off! 🙂 The oil comments are interesting are interesting thoigh....
