All knots reduce breaking strain, but, as JC pointed out, the weakest point is where rig body meets mainline

Just an update. 

Recently I was using small green muppets baited with squid and mackerel for whiting and I had a doggie take the upper hook. The rig was not jerked up and down, just allowed to move with the motion of the boat.

Further update. 

Not keeping records but it seems that fish tend to take the higher muppet on a 3-1 basis. My lower one is usually 8-10" above the lead and the second around 10-12" above the lower and the same if I have 3 snoods. 

Not sure what to make of it all yet, but I might start putting the first muppet 12-18" up from the lead???

Something to do with a better/stronger tide pull further off the sea bed maybe? Works the muppets more vigorously?

Yes, possibly but I wonder if it is also a combination of the bait scent and visibility as the fish had crab and fish in them. If they were grubbing about just on crab I would have expected the lower one to be taken. 

Who knows? A bit more experiment required.

I guess it all comes down to how it all really behaves under water rather than how we think it does. Is the tide such that there is a bow in the line and the lower two snoods are actually on the deck and the upper one is the only one up off the bottom?

I have been having a think about it but no, most of the time I fish them straight up and down. I have trotted them down tide and eventually hit dabs 😆

Another thing I have found when using small, 4" or less, is unless you are using a long shank hook you miss a few more fish than normal.

To counter this I am using either a bead or rig tubing so that the hook bend is about 2/3rds the way down the muppet and it seems to be working so far.
