If you have the vision + chart card, you cant just plug it in, because although the basic chart will work, a lot of the other stuff like birds eye view, relief shading, and guidance will not work. The only way all the functionality can be achieved is to load the area of interest via active captain. Yes, Garmin have changed the ‘tiles’ in favour of a ‘selected area’. Both myself and the support guy preferred the tile system. Neil, you will need to register your chart via active captain, or Garmin express, then upload the area of interest to your active captain sd card in the plotter. The tech guy said it is best if you ring them as you may need to delete a file on the Garmin card to make life easier. TBH daily updates on the vision + will be a PITA as you will need to reload the selected area on each update ! However, stuff doesn't change that much so I would only do it every 6 months or so. Hope that helps …. Thanks Ian, it does. Last night I managed to down load 4.14gb of data from 4 squares stretching along the south coast and Channel Islands. This I will take to the boat and transfer to the plotter but will ring Garmin support before I do it! I love the simplicity of the Garmin instruction sheet that accompanies the card. Shame the reality is a polar opposite 🤣
Saintly Fish
Also I noticed that the new software update has completely changed the layout of the menu functions which is a complete PITA. After two years I was just getting used to the layout as it was!! 🙄 GPSguru

Saintly Fish
So I spent an hour and a half today sat on my boat tidying up shit that didn't need tidying, whilst the charts transferred. Got to 98% and got an error message saying I had insufficient space on the active captain card !!!! FFS I'd just got off the phone to Garmin and nobody mentioned a potential lack of storage! 😩🤬

You get a 32gb card. The file transfer is approx 5gb. So how the hell can I be out of storage? What am I not understanding here?

Format it on a PC and then put it back in and recreate an active captain card. Edited April 20, 2022 by GPSguru

Why do I have 4 cards anyway? Is it because the plotters come with a base and active card? Then the two are networked together! so, 2 of 4 not needed!! I dont know, mine will run without any cards, but I keep one active captain in one plotter and a blank card in the other plotter for screen dumps etc.
GPSguru
4 hours ago, JonC said: I had it wrapped around my head, I’m only onG3 vision. That will still require you to load it via active captain to get all the options, especially relief shading. Once you have registered it to your Garmin account, it will show on the active captain app.
GPSguru
1 hour ago, JonC said: Should I be able to access the charts from my phone? Yes, provided that the chart is registered to your Garmin account, which you can do via Garmin express, or Active Captain. You need to access the charts on your phone / ipad to upload the selected area from active captain.
JDP
Turns out I’ve got worldwide charts on my phone not jus Oz. Just been looking at the amazing detail of the sea floor around the areas I used to fish around the IOW, almost makes me want to fish it again. Some of the detail of the wrecks is pretty impressive. A couple from St Catherine’s IOW. Edited April 21, 2022 by JDP

I burned more fuel than I care to remember over a couple of seasons fishing there and it was hard work every trip, with many, many blanks. 😭
