Looks like a glorious day out there. Funny seeing those places I fished so many years ago with my own boat and working on charters.

Ok, so share some numbers of where the tope live. I'm fucked if I can find the bastards.

They were always more fickle around the needles area than heading further to the Nab.

Do you ever try for them SW of the Needles around N50'38.814 W1'37.837 around the wreck. Currents were strong but the area used to be ok for tope, turbot. Where the arrow is, lower left on the screen. Also the wrecks closer to the lighthouse.
Do you use a downriver with burley ?

this is the area we normally try, also the hockey stick just below. There are some small banks to the east of the hockey stick too.
I fish at anchor (and tried drifting), it's pretty snaggy around here.

That was common ground when I worked on charters, far less people fished more to the west. Those wrecks in that area you've outlined were located by landmarks when I first started out fishing that area. They were once loaded with pollack up to 16lb and getting a bait to the bottom through all the fish was very hard. I suppose the wrecks are stuffed these days ? how about those to the east off Brook and Chale ?

Never tried them, it's such a long and expensive journey.

Ok, so Leo and I gave it another go today. Left Hamble at 07.45 and arrived 3 miles south of the needles around 09.10.
Found our spot, dropped the anchor in anticipation, with positivity and excitement.
Nothing.
One conger to 12lb and 7 dogs.
£150 in diesel burnt emoji31.png.
But on the plus side, it was a gorgeous day (once the swell settled at around 10.30am).

The crew grabbed an hours shut eye en route

Yes that was the case back when I fished them, also the added time to get there with the slow charter boat meant I mostly fished them with my own boat. Some of them fished extremely well and the ones closer to shore meant you could fish them in bigger tides.
