Andy135
Anyone ever had a ling from east or west Wight areas? I've never caught one and I'm keen to fix that, but I've not heard of them being caught round this way. Any ideas?

Maverick
The only Ling I have had our way has always been well offshore ( 20miles) towards Portland/Weymouth Bay. All caught drifting on wrecks with bait instead of lures. That said I haven't given the local wrecks a go for any length of time, the knowledge of them being hammered puts me off spending much time trying Saintly Fish

We normally find Ling in the deeper water, mainly on wrecks that are over 180 ft deep ............... They put up an excellent fight, but rarely can you return them as they 'blow' (barotrauma) easily. You can fish those wrecks all day with lures and never see a Ling (but get plenty of Pollock).......... put on some baited feathers or even just a baited hook (fillet of Mack) on a simple running ledger and you will soon find the Ling, they are always the first fish to the bait, even quicker than pout ............... you need a heavy trace as they have some serious teeth ...........an average fish is 15lb - 20lb, my biggest is 34lb ............... Odyssey
Used to get them on mid channel wrecks, pirk baited with mackerel and you’re away, baited feathers also work.... Get out a bit wider 😉
Maverick
Yes drift the perimeter of the wreck as close to the bottom as you dare and hold on, they go like stink and as said above have some serious nashers My largest was just a baby at 24lb Andy135
SiDfish
A mate, who used to fish for Ireland, swears by luminous green jellyworms/grubs above a mackerel bait and it certainly works for him. I use hot orange gummi macks for the pollack and rarely get ling Andy135 and GPSguru 1
Andy135
Do they take pout or whiting? Cant get mackerel at all round here.

You need to rig your own gummi makks as the pre-rigged sets don't have heavy enough traces to avoid a bite off from the ling .............. Funny incident last season .......... my wife is not keen on fishing Red Gills or shads , as it is too much like hard work, so she always fishes Red 6/0 Gummi makks on a string of three .............. it was fun watching her struggle with what she thought was a whopper ........... on the string was a 18lb Pollock, a 14lb Pollock, and a large pout ! ....... I told her it was extreme fluff chucking ! Edited November 20, 2020 by GPSguru Geoff, SiDfish, Maverick and 2 others 4
Ivan Tuna
I’m planning to target Ling next year on the wrecks south of the IoW, never tried before, more of a lure guy to be honest but used to fish for them from Whitby years ago.
