Andy135
Just heard from @GPSguru. Thankfully it was not him or Gary, but unfortunately an acquaintance of theirs. More to come soon I'm sure when the cause is established.

Hoping it's not @thejollysinker or @GPSguru?? No, we are ok, but it is a good friend of ours. The boat was a 20ft Orkney (80hp honda). I was too far away (15 miles + into a head sea) when I heard the CG mayday relay. If it had been 45 mins earlier I was 5 miles away mack fishing. It sunk very quickly, but I don't know any more detail. From the co-ords given by the CG, It went down on the wreck of the Glocliffe, about 10 miles out. At 4:00pm 2LB, 1 plane, 1 chopper, an Mod boat, and 4others were still searching for the missing crew. ☹️ I’m devastated ! GPSguru
Small update. The search has been called off, as to whether anything was found, I know not. edit: cleaning the boat and just heard an ‘all ships’ on 16 for one person missing, LJ unknown ☹️ I do know the alarm was raised by 999 call ( according to the original CG mayday relay) hence the mayday relay from the CG. However, I know that Peter has a radio and is comfortable using it as we have spoken many times. I have since heard the mayday was on 16, but I certainly never heard it 🤷♂️ My guess will be that the divers will go down tomorrow ☹️ 45 mins ealier and I would have right there for him ☹️ If you guys ever want to know where I am, just look up Bluefin on marine traffic, as the AIS is normally on. You should be able to see my today’s track. 👍 Edited May 19, 2023 by GPSguru thejollysinker and Saintly Fish 1

thejollysinker
No doubt we’ll find out soon enough. A very sad day for the boating community but much worse for the families involved ☹️☹️☹️ Geoff and GPSguru 1

GPSguru
As it was not a commercial vessel and there was no other vessel involved, the MAIB will not be investigating the sinking https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj70vd2ev4do

No collision, and flat calm sea. I suspect sea cock failure.
Popular Post Odyssey
I’m sorry but that’s a bit of a poor show of the MAIB…. There is loss of life, lessons can be learned I’m sure for both commercial and leisure boats. On a more human level, I’m sure it would help the family to know what happened 😞 jonnyswamp, thejollysinker, GPSguru and 2 others 1

I know it’s a bit ghoulish speculating but it’s something that if we knew it could prevent it happening on another boat. Also worth mentioning that a decent working bilge pump should be fitted and regularly checked. And also a set of wooden bungs and a rubber mallet ! A lot of folk just don't realise the susceptibility of a seacock, and I suspect very few carry bungs, or have under deck water alarms. Odyssey
2 hours ago, GPSguru said: The deluxe versions were fitted with a sea toilet. My old Orkney had a sea toilet. It had 2 seacocks. The sea toilet is up near the bow behind the helm. It also didn’t come with a manual bilge pump or any kind of bilge pump. I had to fit inspection hatches and fit manual bilge pump myself. If you’ve seen a seacock fail it’s scary…. The flow of water into the boat is large.
Malc
On a slight tangent, I sometimes carry a BILGE PUMP on my kayak and they are cheap, pretty high output, and can be fitted with a hose.
GPSguru
2 hours ago, JonC said: These sort of things are ok for clearing water from a rogue wave or a one off but trying to pump against a hole in the boat is futile. I had a hand operated whale gushed on my old Colvic and it was slower than the boat itself. I think the bungs and mallet sounds like a good idea. Got to agree, I have used manual pumps and a bloody bucket is quicker ! My RIB hull is sealed to the outside world, so there is no hull drain plug on the outside of the hull. At the stern I have a sump and the main hull drain plug, drains into the sump, which is fitted with a Johnson 800GPH auto bilge pump. However, my main deck drainage is twin 4 inch elephant trunks, which have a flow capacity of 6000 L/min (1300 GPM, or to compare with a bilge pump the trunks are giving a minimum flow rate of 78,000 GPH !, but of course you need to be moving forward at any speed above 3kts for them to work. However, I have tried them and with 4 inches of water on the deck, the trunks emptied the boat in seconds, by moving at a speed. Under normal circumstances they would be used on the plane, after poor wave management and taking a 'stuffing' (I may or may not have done that). I even carry a 4 inch cork bung, just in case one of the hypalon trunks ever springs a leak. Saintly Fish

I have 1st hand experience of holes in hulls and I wasn't meaning to have the hand pump as a stand alone pump but as a failsafe method in case your pump fails and I know how good hammers and bungs are at slowing water ingress.
