Chap with an Osprey 26 got back to me. Anyone know anything about them? What about the Yanmar engine and leg?

Nice looking boats. They're on my list of "boats to own one day". Mostly inboard versions over here, but they do make outboard versions for their home market in the US.

Not sure about the legs but the Yanmar engines are known to be pretty bullet proof. I have a 6lpa and it’s quite easy to work on.

If that’s the one down in Plymouth it’s a cracker!

Nice boats, bit less beam than an offshore 25 but good sea keeping qualities. Nice boats though

A friend of mine had a 26' Osprey with the Yamaha engine and leg.   The boat is great.  The engine was fine but he had an inordinate amount of problems with his outdrive.  He had bought 2 spare complete legs so always had one to replace the one in current use.  Not sure what issues they have but he was always having to do work on them.  He was a car mechanic so could do a lot of the stuff himself to help with costs but in the end gave up and sold the boat and the legs.  You need to remember Yamaha ceased the production of outdrives in 2007 this could mean sourcing parts could become an issue, that's one reason my mate had 2 spares.

Thanks Maveric. The rarity of the legs are a concern, the one in question has been rebuilt apparently, the advert months ago mentioned a spare, the current one doesn't. I didn't realise they were out of production so long.

I need to ask the seller a few more questions. His cabin picture is not very informative but it looks like the heads may be in the cabin rather than in a separate room, was that the case with your friends?

Sorry I never actually went out on it so never took much notice of where the wc was.

Just a thought, not many would have spare drives, the boat you're looking at wouldn't happen to be called Wishing would it?

Saw that thanks, looks a decent enough boat. Will be a month or so before we are allowed to travel, ideally if I am doing the thousand mile odd round trip I would be able to look at a few different boats. It seems a seller's market and a lot of boats being sold, are people buying without looking or a sea trial?

I think in the smaller fishing boat range they may be. But if your spending £40k I don’t think any right minded person will buy without a try.
it’s just people are buying boats instead of holiday homes, or so it seems.

Ok, just found what's probably the same advert you're looking at. Boat style is quite similar to the Starfisher. Nice lines.

Twin engines are a plus in my view - engine bay looks reasonably well kept too. Shame the owner didn't tidy up the living quarters for the photos though - looks a bit untidy but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a spring clean.

Only potential down-side would be that the cockpit area looks a bit small. From the photos available I reckon it could only fish two, but that may not be a problem depending on your intended use.

On balance I'd say it's worth a sea trial 👍

There is a Faeton 910 Moraga for sale not too far away, anyone know anything about them? Twin Yanmar on shafts. Seems even rarer than a Starfisher!

Very popular on the continent. They were on my radar before I purchased the starfisher. I was going to show you one last week but as I know travel is an issue I didn’t bother. If it’s local to you I’d definitely get down to take a look. Could be the answer to your prayers?

Yanmar are good engines too!

A friend of mine used to own a Faeton Morago 780 with a single 240hp Yanmar on an outdrive.  He loved his and regularly took it a cross the channel.  I buddied up with him on a couple of trips over the channel and it seemed to handle weather reasonably well, flat out it achieved 32 knots,  he always drove it like a scalded cat :classic_ninja:  I had a Karnic 2460 with a 260hp i/o so could keep up with him if I wanted to, just.

So although not the same as you are looking at it seems the Faetons are decent boats

The Yanmar engines seem to have five anodes in the raw water system, I don't think they have been checked for several years, how much of a problem is that likely to be?

It could be problematic. They should be changed every year without fail.
